10 Great Reasons Why You Should Join The Indian Armed Forces

by Uday Kumar on June 14, 2012

Hi, in this post I want to talk about the 10 reasons that will motivate you to join the Indian Armed forces. Being a naval officer in the Indian Navy, I have enjoyed its benefits and I want you to get them too. If you are not 100% sure whether the Armed forces is for you, this article will help you make a good decision.

1. Rock Solid Job Security

Nowadays in India private companies do not give us as much job security as they gave to our parents and grand parents. In an economy where nothing is certain, having a government job is the best for us because we will never be asked to leave from a government job. Best of all there are no pay cuts and only increments throughout our life. Immaterial of whether the economy falls or rupee falls, no one will be sent home jobless from a government job.

2. Pay and Allowances

If you are a freshly passed out and commissioned officer in the armed forces you will make about Rs.42,000 per month. Additionally the allowances that you will get are flying pay, high altitude allowance, sailing allowance, island allowance, pilotage allowance, diving allowance, submarine allowance, commando allowance, etc. Allowances vary between 6,000 to 16,000 plus DA of 60%.

3. Great Facilities for You and Your Family

The facilities like free schooling to children, free medical facilities to dependents, Canteen facilities, Car to senior officers, loan facilities, excellent accomodation where ever you are posted, free air tickets to you and all your family anywhere in India once in a year. Facilities like swimming pool, tennis court, squash courts, etc are part of your accommodation.

Memberships to Clubs, gyms and golf courses are absolutely so cheap that they are as good as free.

4. Great Food at No Cost

If you are an unmarried officer, food is free of cost. Once married the ration used for the preparation are given to the officer at his doorstep free of cost. I dont think any company can afford for such an arrangement to its employees.

5. Awesome Foreign Assignments

The MNCs have a way of tempting their workers to work more with the prize tag of a foreign assignment. The poor souls slough their a** so much only to get an assignment to work in a foreign country for a few months. For a few lucky, may be a year or so. Whereas in the armed forces we send Officers with diplomatic visas to Foreign Countries as Defence Attaches in the Embassy as a peace posting. We give them an opportunity to actually chill out.

Our officers even go to do Masters in Reputed Defence Colleges. The Navy sends every year a handfull of Officers to the Royal War College, London, US Marine Staff College, etc. The kind of facilities and luxury these officers receive in those countries are unmatched.

6. Scope for Higher Education

If you are a studious person, the this is the place for you to be. By the time you retire in the normal course of your career in the navy, you end up doing 2 masters (M.Sc) degree, 1 M.Phil, 1 MBA and 1 Phd (Optional) in your life. Can you name a company in the world which gives so much paid leave and pays its employee to pursue this quantum of studies.

Technical Officers have the opportunity to pursue M.Tech from IIT Delhi, Chennai and Mumbai in their course of their career in the seats which are reserved for Armed Forces.

7. Respect Wherever You Go

You might wonder why I have put this point as No.7, because in the present world not many people care a shit about it. But actually speaking the respect you will command from your soldiers, subordinates, the society and even your family is something you will never be able get in any profession. 100% of the time you will (even if you dont wish to) end up being a role model to your children.

8. First Priority Physical Fitness

Today no one thinks before joining a company in these lines – whether the job will allow me to be fit, play a sport, do some physical exercises or indulge for some fun time in physical activity/adventure activity. But job in the armed forces is all about what I have mentioned in the previous line. Your physical fitness is paramount to us. You can assure yourself a healthier lifestyle in this place.

9. Great Post Retirement Options

On retirement, apart from the handsome amount that you will receive, you will get a pension throughout your life. Today an officer with 22 years of service after retirement will get a pension of approx. Rs.30,000 per month. Even after retirement with your experiance and knowledge base the Officers of the Armed Forces are the most sought after commodity for leadership roles in big companies. The armed forces nurtures each officer into a leader which becomes his second nature. Hence a second innings post retirement is very probable and equally attractive.

10. Style and the ‘Cool’ Factor

Not many people understand the style and charisma that sticks with the men in uniform. Beleive me, there is nothing more appealing than a smart officer turned up in a crisp uniform. You can never buy that outfit outside. Like the Bournville ad, you have to earn it to understand it. The pride which comes along with wearing the uniform is out of the earth and you must experiance it to understand it.

I hope the above points were motivating for you. Do you want to join the armed forces now? Looking forward for your comments!

Jai Hind.

Uday Kumar

Hi,

sir i attended the ssb two times .one at 1AFSB and 2nd at Bangalore(army). Both for the technical entry.my first ssb was not up to the mark, but my second ssb was up to the mark .only one candidate recommended. i was the second person from my ssb batch. i thought that bcz at the time of confrence they took time of approx 10-12 mint. so it all shows that i was on the border line.but never mind, i will come again because i am born in army hospital ,i grew up in army family,i studied in army school and i want to do a job as a commissioned officer in army………………Army is calling…….

Respected Sir,
My mother and father are both in air force, i am presently studying in 2nd year electronics and electrical engg and have a passion to become a fighter pilot in air force. However my mother and father constantly discourage me not to join airforce as they say that you have to butter your bosses to get promotion and foreign trips
Is it true?. Do people who are dedicated to work ignored in armed force.

32 uday July 12, 2012 at 5:50 pm

Dear Hemadri , it is a very normal tendency of most of the personnel in the armed forces. This is not only applicable to Air Force but to navy, army and other civil organisations also where many people are aiming for a few top positions. And since all of them can not become a flag rank/senior ranks, the others who dont make it, generally make such allegations against those who have made it. Do not go by what your parents say. They havent seen navy and army, may be once they see it , then they may feel Air Force to be better.

Hello Everyone,

Well according to me, If any one wanted to Join the indian Defence Forces
So He/She may not Think about the Benefits and the Facilities provided to the Defence Person, Because all the Company will Provide the Benefits and the Facilities to there Employees, But yes In Defence Forces the Facilities is More
Because the Job Duty Is very Hard and After or Before Joinning the Indian Defence Forces we knew that In Defence Force there is no Security of life.

Well According to me:-
If we see the Today’s Young Boys/Girls they are feeling shy to be an Indian even with that they Feel Shy to Speak the National Language which Is HINDI,
According to my personal Knowlage In India now a Day People are not a lot Intrested In our Culture and our Traditional Values, and In India If the People Is Graduate or he/she did some Higher Study after Completed There Graduation
So don’t ask me they got lot’s of Attitude and they were not Intrested to speak In Hindi,
I am not an Against of English Language, Because I am Young I Born In 21′st Century I very much Knew the Importance of English Language But what I mean to Explain here Is that, we are Indians and we do have our Own Language which Is Hindi, so why we Young People feel Shy to make our Conversation In HIndi Language.
My English Is Good and i got an Accent even I worked with an Internation Companies Before but Still I loved to speak In Hindi, Because I think Makeing Conversation In an English Is Good onlly with the People who don’t Understood an English Language.

Well Accoeding to Me:-
Those who think that I am an Indian
Those who think that yes I am a Good Indian Citizen
Those who think that I do have a Responsibilities Towards my Nation
Those who are Brave
Those who are Strong
Those who are Fit by Personality (Not GYM look Boddy) Natural Fit Boddy
Those who have an Attitude
Those who have a Self-Motivation Skill
Those whao have a Good and Clean Heart
HE/SHE can because an Officer and no one ll Stop you.

I belive In One thing that If we love our work, then the work ll Always Search of us.

dear saluja u have a great misconception that ‘Hindi’ is a national language of india…and whatever Defence can provide ..none company can provide even most important is job security…..

Truly inspirational, made my decision to join the armed forces even more resounding. But having no army background or much knowledge/information on how to join, I have little to no guidance. I am hoping that you can give me some broad guidelines on how to join the armed forces and make a career out of it. I have completed secondary school and want to be either an air force pilot or a sailor in the Indian navy. If it were up to me I would join right away. But it seems that there is no opportunity for me until I complete school. How should I go about pursuing my dreams? Which is the best route? I think I should join the NCC for the time being( It might also help with my not-so-athletic lifestyle) but I don’t know how to join that either. I asked around and came across some info that said that students can only join through their schools. Is that true? My school has no such program. Is there some other way? Or perhaps something else I should be doing for the army? Like I said, I come from a pretty clueless place. So, if you could help, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you, Sir.

137 uday1 December 5, 2012 at 8:58 pm

Dear Manvi, I think your school does not have an NCC. That does not matter!! Do your studies well. After your 12th you can join the NDA (Tri Services) or appear for 10+2 Tech entry for Navy/ Army. Your entire education will be taken care off. And at the end of your graduation you will be commissioned

I recently subscribed to your blog to follow your tips regarding SSB’s and the life in the Armed Forces. It’s a commendable job on your part to say the least.

I have attempted the interviews 4 times and have been conferenced out on all 4 occassions. I have never joined any coaching institutes, but now I have my SSB’s again for TGC and I am not sure whether I should be joining an institute or I should be carrying on forward, on my own.

Your advice would be very much helpful. Thank you.

Sir,

I just cleared my 02/2013 batch SSB for the officer cadre at Indian Coastguard and have been deemed medically fit too. Eagerly waiting for the merit list to come out. Most of all the above ten points were glanced before I had gone for the selection and that helped me succeed at Delhi. If i get a chance to enter Navy will be more than happy.

Whats is your suggestion sir about the scope of a technical officer at Indian Coastguard?.

Your Respectfully,

Respected Sir,
I have my afsb on 15 July. While I am confident about clearing the psych and gto tests, I’m a little nervous about the interviews. I was never much into sports due to some reason or the other although I consider myself active. Can my non-indulgence in sports be a reason for my rejection in interviews? What could be the appropriate answer if they ask me questions regarding this?
waiting for your response
Thank you

I want to serve the country in any way I can and so I am thinking of joining AFMC, Pune, but I wanted to know that being a commission officer after completing the MBBS course, what exactly will I be supposed to do? And if I would want to continue research or specialisation in any particular field of medicine, will it be allowed? I want to be known as a doctor, but being in the Indian Army is something really great. So I just wanted to be sure that will proffessionally I be a doctor during the service liability or would we be assigned with some other duties? I can swim a bit but iam not a proffessional
And one more doubt was that i have two plates in my left forearm as it got fractured around five years back, but the doctors say that the plates are now burreied deep within my bones.
So will this thing prove to be a barrier during my medicals ???

Dude,

Whatever, but why are you talking shit about civilian counterpart jobs? Is that what have you learnt in all your service, that false ego fails you miserably in settling in civilian society post retirement, that you guys all know very well. Nobody in your neighbouthood gives a shit about you guys false, pampered ego.

And yes, you guys are a bunch of the loosers lot. Who couldn’t make into IITs, NIT’s, IIM’s, Medical, Law institutes, dont you forget that ;-)
All it takes to get into defence is a 2 months coaching & SSB interview tips given by old looser colonels who could do nothing more than opening SSB shops.

Correct me, if i’m wrong anywhere.

And don’t drag this on patriotic lines, as that’s the only possible direction you can divert this to.

1) Among Short service commission and Permanent commission which is better( Please tell me the pros and cons )
2) I have recently applied for NAIC( Naval Armament inspection cadre) . What is the difference between an technical officer and a NAIC officer

I am working in a MNC company and its tough for me to get 5 days leave. So I cant try repeatedly for Defense. It will be my 1 and should be a final shot. Please guide me the right path from your personal experience.

Dear Uday Sir,
I have been recommended and declared medically fit for PC(NAIC). I got interest to join Navy, before knowing all these details, becoz I have passion and blessings of god. I didn’t prepare specially other than your blogs and few tips in Mrunal site, apart from getting to know about armaments, about Navy in Wikipedia. It helped me a lot. Thanks a lot for that.

I have few questions now and I request you to please clarify me:
1. When will the merit list be released?
2. While joining INA, do we need to undergo medical test again? Would we get rejected if we fail over there?
3. How long we would be in INA?
4. I heard about lot of tortures and ragging activities in acadamy, though I dont bother much by grace of God, would all those be within the limits of tolerance? How to behave there to avoid punishments (upto our best)?
5. Where will we get training for NAIC and what is the most probable posting area for the job?
6. Will NAIC people permitted to join IITs to learn advanced technologies and systems?
7. Get to for the development of physical fitness before joining, what will be maximum Kilometers required to run in the academy or during service? And what are the other ways we need to prepare for the physical fitness apart from swimming?

Jail Hind Sir,
I wanted to ask weather I should go for CDS entry in army or not
As I was selected for N.D.A. I was there in N.D.A. for 54 days doing my training but I left because I was finding it really tough.
Your experience will be of immense help if you guide me through this.
