Hello RohiT,
What was your answer for 5 th and 12th?

4 Harish January 28, 2010 at 5:53 am

Dear Kumar,
i am willing to join Indian Navy. and from last 10 days i am observing that all the aspirants are just here to seek help and they dny want to share there experience or feeling shy to do that. They all must think that what if this blog would not be there and KUMAR would not have shown interset to help others. What would be ur level of preperation. No body gets selected in Defence by knowing the questions. We all must feel proud of helping Others. And lastly, Kumar sir (ur name is incomplete without sir, so plz dnt stop me adding that) you are doing a awesome job. you are not only helping others but in many ways you are taking an INDIAN out of us by motivating us. i know suicide is a crime but a physical and mental fit indian dont wish to serve for his country then the suicide can get them to heaven.
At least i am haighly motivated by your this mighty attempt and i found that this is the only life that i have to get..no escape, nothing else. i have to get into it. i am waiting for the cal from navy in SSC logistic cadre. may my GOD see my love towards it and give me the only life i want –INDIAN NAVY.
Thanks again for your awesome and non-selfish effort.

rohit,
speaking how to prepare for psychology…the most important thing that you must understand is that , there is going to be a person who is going to judge you by reading your reply….what you write is taken to be a direct reflection of your character…so inorder to showcase yourself as the most extraordinary person with lot of officer like qualities you need to practse a bit…you must get in the habit of writing very fast ,certain sentences as words are dictated by some of your friends…. you need to write the story a nd the sentences in a positive form…the sentences must have a doer of action and also a good work being carried out…for every story and sentence that you write there is a requirement of a hero…. the psychologist consider yourself to be that hero….for eg.. if you need to write a sentence on apple then write-sam gave an apple to the child, rat- vivek killed the rat that caused trouble, temple- tom helped the old man reach the temple, steal- radha caught the thief stealing red handedly, etc…i understand that writing so elobrately will take lot of time, but we just can not help it…you need to wite very fast and you need to practise on that…the same to be followed in the picture perception tests also….what ever may be the picture, you need to write something good and positive only….you may write something not relating closely to the picture, but here mark is for what is your quality and not the quality of the story….understand this and get back to me

Sir,
Although i am BE(IT) passionate about joining armed forces.I have attended 1 SSB for IMA CDS entry at allahabad but was screened out,now i have got two SSB for OTA lined up.I had attended coaching for my first attempt, but it got me more confused. Now i read your blog and it is really helpful, and i am getting the confidence. I still have doubts over my intelligence test and word test but i will practice that. But sir my main concern is i hurt my back with slip disc injury, even though i am working hard to strength my back but its for life. What i know i can clear medical if i do not tell them.I want to know would it be wise decision on my part to join Army,i just love the lifestyle of Defence forces, the facilities,i want to be fit, disciplined, and be an Armymen,be a winner of life. But somehow this injury has created a doubt in me.Still I am ready to go through rigorous training and hard work.

manish, after thinking for a while about your problems i think you must try to find yourself in coastguard or DRDO or defence civilian type job only…that too if you are only very very passionate about joining armed forces…..i tell you this because it is a common thing in the armedforces to get lower back aches and slip discs…in my own family i have seen two defence men who got their back screwed only to realise after the age of 40…so i suggest you that army and airforce would be definitely risky and painful…these days even cadets during their training are facing back problems…this is all due to the regorous training activitis which the body is not able to adopt , since these days children are brought up in a very comfortable environment…so i suggest you to opt for some thing other than army and air force…. navy /coast guard education entry or logistics entry may do you some good…. think about this and get back to me

20 Arun February 22, 2010 at 7:29 am

Dear Kumar Sir,

I have attended the SSB interview 6 times now. I had started out in 2003 when I was in 10+2 and completed 4 attempts at this stage. I was conference out in all attempts. Recently, I was screened out and again conference out also about 2 months ago. As you can see, I had taken a break from 10+2 to completion of engg + 2 years work ex. This was in the hope of improving myself with a professional education and work experience. But all of this hasn’t worked for me.

I am however determined to try it again and continue till I succeed but owing to repeated failure, I am not receiving any support for this. The fact that I am working also doesn’t permit me to take leaves very often. I am need of help to clear the SSB and make it into the armed forces, a dream that I have held for a long time. Every time I fail, I am determined to try again. Please help me in this regard. Is it possible to meet you so that I will be able to share my experiences, which would run to pages if I were to type them out.

Awaiting your response,

Arun

I AM IMPRESSED BY YOUR ZEAL AND VIGOUR TO JOIN ARMED FORCES…. BUT THE PROBLEM IS THAT SOMETIMES CERTAIN THINGS DOES NOT HAPPEN AS PER OUR WISHES…I WOULD ADVICE YOU TO TAKE UP SOME KIND OF COACHING ,IF YOU CAN TO MAINLY IDENTIFY YOUR WEAKNESS AND DRAWBACKS….BY DOING SO I THINK YOU WOULD BE ABLE TO FARE BETTER….BUT JUST TO ADD A BIT -A COURSE MATE OF MINE GOT SELECTED IN HIS 9 TH ATTEMPT….HE WAS DOING HIS FINAL YEAR OF B.Sc WHEN HE CLEARED HIS NDA EXAM AND SSB AND NOW HE IS DONG FINE IN THE SERVICES…..REGARDING MEETING OF WHATEVER LITTLE TIME I GET NOW AND THEN, I TRY TO DO THIS BLOG…IF I HAVE TO MEET PEOPLE THEN IT WOULD BE VERY DIFFICULT FOR ME TO MANAGE TIME…SO I AM SORRY….I GENERALLY STAY IN MUMBAI/KOCHI

22 Arun February 23, 2010 at 3:12 am

Dear Kumar Sir,

Thank you for your words of advice and encouragement. It is really encouraging to know that some one has been able to crack the SSB on the ninth attempt. I would like to know a few more things from you:

1. Does the SSB expect more from a repeater?
2. Does the SSB expect more from a person above 25?
3. What is it that I can do on my own, say some practice to improve my preparation for the SSB? It is just that I cant attending any coaching (time crunch due to work), but I am always looking for guidance.

Thanks in advance.

THE SSB FOR WOMEN IS THE SAME AS IT IS FOR MEN…IT DEPENDS , IF YOU ARE FEELING UNDERCONFIDENT ON GROUP DISCUSSIONS AND LECTUREAND ATTENDING INTERVIEWS THEN YOU BETTER JOIN ONE….REST IT IS THE SAME PROCEDURE AS FOR MEN….NAVAL ARCHITECTURE IS A VERY GOOD BRANCH IN THE NAVY… THE JOB IS SATISFYING AND YOU WILL FIND LOTS OF OPPURTUNITIES EVEN AFTER LEAVING NAVY(RETIREMENT)

My dilemna is my weight, i am working as techie and because of the nature of our work i have added enough and to adhere to the exact BMI i need to reduce 10kg from now.
I got 10 days for SSB from today and i would like to know how much time the academy will provide me to be fit.
I am working hard on interviews and GD topics but i lack the confidence of clearing it.
Could you please provide some examples of interview questions and way to answer it, sir.

Hi Kumar,
It’s very good to see someone helping out SSB candidates in realizing their dream.
My reply may have come too late, for I can see the date of posting as mar 2010. All I wanted to tell you is, when you type any post in all caps, it implies that you are shouting at the other person.
While I’m pretty sure that you must have done this to make your post stand out of the clutter of other people’s replies, I felt the need to tell you about this small hygiene issue in writing on the web.
I hope you are not offended by my reply and will take it as a suggestion from a friend.

Amit

Reply

40 Kumar April 4, 2010 at 3:34 am

there is no magic or shortcut to success….as an officer you can not tell that you have stage fear…so get out of your fear and become more confident..english language gives you confidence to speak but not having mastery over this language should not bother you much…put up your ideas to the board as clearly as possible…speaking in good english will definitely impress the board members but that does not mean that if you are not so good in english it will get you in trouble…they do not give negative marks for your bad english…the importance is given to your confidence, your ideas, your psychology, your group/team spirit and leadership qualities…so do not worry and work on the said traits as much as possible

Hi everyone,
I have attended SSB interview at 2AFSB Mysore 2 times, one for cdse(Flying) course, and 122 gdoc on may 2007. In my first attempt i was out in the screening test itself. The main reason is lack of preparation, why am telling is , i didnt had any knowledge about the interview. I just attended it in blank mind. The 2nd time i attended was really good one. I covered up all the tests conducted, how i should perform in that and all. But still in some tests especially the interview, your preparation wont pay off until or unless, whatever you utter over there is true. That means you cant simply bluff over there.
My stuff in the interview was really bad. I think it is the main reason for me for not being selected. Here are some of the questions interviewer who happens to be a Wing Commander asked me….
1) From your performance in various tests till now,how do you rate yourself in your group?
2) Can you tell according to you who performed well and whats the reason for that?
3) What are the qualities you like and you dont like in your best friends?
4) What is the name IAF helicopter acrobatic team?
These are some of stuffs which I remember. I would like tell you a question which was asked to me in the group conference. The Interviewing officer asked Have you made any girlfriends from the girls who came to board? .I was surprised by his question, because of this unexpected question, my answer was stammering. Beside this it was fruitful experience for me in the 2AFSB. Though I couldnt clear the SSB interview, my experince in the 2AFSB helped me to crack my MCA campus interview. I wont stop here as I will be attending my SSB interview for both navy and air force in the comming months. I am sure with my confidence and experience I will be cracking the interview this time.

Hello Kumar sir,

I will be appearing for the General Service(Tech) SSB interview in Bangalore on 5th May. I have done my B.E.(Instrumentation). Should I expect any technical questions? Also what is the intelligence test which is held on day 1 all about? Is it reasoning questions or maths?

This will be my first attempt at SSB, so I don’t have much idea about it.

hi friends…
first of all i would salute u because u want to be in the defence!
secondly i would say that self belief is the key.

about my ssb i would say that…it was not so tough as other competitors would say.

some thing which i noted were…
. people use very bad handwriting to write fast and to save time…which consequently lowers there success rate. so write in good handwriting.
. it’s not all about saying something in the group discussion or the lecturette…we should speak some thing relevent.because the officer testing us is after all an ofiicer!!!
. Be cool and just njoy the ssb.
. never have negative thought in ur mind but dont be too over confident either.
. learn to speak english. without english(not like shakespear…lolz) no body can survive

all the best

49 Upendra Prasad April 18, 2010 at 4:36 pm

. my questions generally revolved around steel manufacturing(because my father works in steel industry)
. some questions related to my btech subjects were asked.
. i am a computer student so they asked about compiler design, operating systems, software engineering…
. and some class 9 and 10 concepts of physics and chemistry.
like why steel doesnt rust and iron does.
. what is galvanization?
. and asked about my future plans.
. what were my plan b’s.
. then some questions relating to self..like how do u keep urself fit?
. what games do u play?
i told table tennis.then the next question was what is the weight of the table tennis ball??(i had no idea…)
.

friends fill the piq form intelligently..beacause they check for the information consistencies.Same is applicable for you Phycological tests.

Dear Sir,

after joining indian navy in January 10 on 10+2 (technical) attempted CUSAT naval architect test during the first semester and is expected to get selected. But not sure whether to go for it or continue in Mechanical Engineering. Sir, how long this architect course will be and when will i get commissioned. Is this course any better than the Mechanical Engineering in Indian Navy. Can you please give some comparison or details / benefit if opted for naval architect

naval architect is an awesome branch for those who do not want to sail at sea and who are interested in higher studies…this branch gives oppurtunities to study from IIT and other prestigious colleges in india…this branch has lot of value outside navy also…if you want a cool and peaceful life then this is the branch…but if you want a busy, happening, neck to neck fighting in career, good growth in career and always fighting for things in life ,then be in technical only…be it be engineering or electrical it does not make much of a difference…

see anurag stammering is not a permanent disorder…so people in the ssb expect you to speak without stammering…cos a lot of therapies are available these days to overcome stammering…so i dont think that ssb will recommend anyone with stammering..if the stammering is very minor level then it will not be a problem…but if it is too much, then it is a problem

Sir,

Thank you very much Sir. But is it that I have to wait 4.5 years +2 years over and above the 6 months already finished (7 years total to get commissioned as Sub.Lieutenant? And the physical training also will be the same as being done now, while studying? Who will be paying for all expenses in IIT Delhi etc.? Sir, sorry to bother you with so many questions, but I have take a decision and give option by 4th June to KUSAT. Kindly advise asap.

Thanks

no not at all…you will become slt on completion of 4 years….and as an officer you will not be made to do all the physical activities as much as a cadet…and the government will pay all your expenses…..plus you will get your pay from 3 years onwards…so donot worry you will be in comparison with your other technical coursemates

sir another question rather some questions???

1 i am a good poet sometimes i write poems and i hided it in previous two ssb interviews
because i thought that IO may think he is introvert

2 if IO asks whom do u tell your problems???

3 what one must do when there is no cooperation in GTO all fights???

4 if hairs do matter in ssb because i have seen many boys with long hairs clearing ssb

Reply

77 Kumar June 11, 2010 at 3:44 am

1. no !!!please tell all that you can tell about yourself

2.tell whomso ever you tell your problems!!!you just cant ask me and tell the io what ever i tell you…come on!!!

3.better you be the one to control them and organise it…you better at the top of your voice call all to your attention and then try to take over the situation and organise it properly…but do not look too much trained on these aspects

4.i would have a good impression of a chap with short hairs…i would feel that he is fully eager to join the forces, that he has started adapting himself to this kind of a life from now…

written exams are there for a certain number of entries only…but there are a number of entries which do not require a written exam like the short service commission entries, law entries ,education entries, coast gaurd, logistics entries, ground duty officers in airforce, etc…only cdse and nda have written exam…all other entries are through direct entry through ssb only…as far as nda and cdse are concerned those who fail in the written exams do not get call for ssb

102 Shubhashis Sen Gupta June 21, 2010 at 5:41 pm

Hi,

First of all let me introduce myself. I am working in an MNC as a software engineer, however still aspire to be an officer Indian Armed Forces.

I have faced SSB twice for Permanent commission in Indian Airforce, the first one for Engineers Entry and the second for Pilot entry.Luckily or unluckily, I was called for an SSB in 4 AFSB Varanasi. However, I have not cleared any of them. I have seen many of my fellow-mates clear SSB, whom we never thought would clear.

One thing I learnt while facing SSB is the essence of oneself and self confidence. Tips and tricks of passing SSB apart, one can clear an SSB just by being what he really is. I am not in a position to advice, but I would prefer being myself in this SSB which I have to face as I cleared CDS.

The most important point they take into consideration is the honesty and truthfulness of an individual. Believe me or not, you will find same questions repeated in all the written psychometric tests in different forms. They would surely note if you try to deceive as you any have different answers for the same questions, which you would never notice, but they would.

They written psychometric tests consist of -

1. Word association test
2. Thematic apperception test
3. Situation reaction test

I would not prefer to give detailed description of the tests as you would find numerous pages if you google it. I would say, Never bother to check these pages out as numerous views by numerous people would affect your own thoughts which they want to see.

I have read people asking if they can reveal that they are good poets. I would say ,Yes. However, when you say about your faults, please make sure that you support it with statements saying what corrective actions you are taking to curb them. Above all be truthful about your achievements as well as your faults. A person is not perfect. However, he tends to be perfect if he knows about his own drawbacks. And, above all the interviewer knows know that.

So my advice would be to go for the test without any outside influence as this would enable you to be judged fairly. I hope everyone writing here gets recommended. However, if my any faintest chance one does not, please do not faint, as you would be surely suitable for some other job.

Hello Sir,
Could you give me some tips on how to greet/interupt someone in the PPDT/GDs? Specially if someone is getting hyper very frequlently and is unwilling to listen to anyone. Also, suitable phrases/point to put in the PPDT discussion as in most of the cases picture would be a blurred one and story may differ depending on ones perception. For example, it may look like a fire in the fields to one and explosion or aircrash to another. So, how could I justify that it’s a fire in this case?
Thanks in anticipation

hey Kumar,
I read through your blog just by chance…my friends have got selected in indian navy…so while discussin their ssb’s n medical’s experncs,we got on to search for some blogs and videos n articles,to get to know what kind of life they would live at ezhimala as SUB.LT’s…
sadly at that point, nobody got hold of your this effort…but now that everyone has left,i thought of finding out things once again…

would be the first girl, writtin in to you…but then even after going all through your work, cudnt find the answer for my initial question…
how’s the life out their in INA EZHIMALA..??!!??
now that even all of them would be hell busy with the training and stuff,i dont even see any bleek chances of their’s calling or mailing stuff….

so..if anybody, wana share their life after clearing ssb’s n medicals n stuff,do post in…out of shakespear and milton, that would add to my knowledge about the real, tough world..

thanx..:)

ANU IF YOU WANT ME TO WRITE AS TO WHAT KIND OF LIFE THEY WILL BE LIVINGN IN EZHIMALA THEN I WILL HAVE TO WRITE A BOOK INSTEAD….BECAUSE EVERY DAY OUT THERE IS A DIFFERENT DAY…THEY ARE PUT TO DO PARADE, DO PT, DO SWIMMING IN SEA AS WELL AS POOL, RUNNING, HOCKEY, FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL, CRICKET, TENNIS,FIRING,ETCETC….THEY WILL BE PUT THROUGH SOME GRUELLING CAMPS WHERE THEY WILL BE PUT IN A WAR LIKE SITUATION AND PUNISHMENT IS JUST LIKE THEIR BREATHING…THEY WILL BE GETTING PUNISHED ALL THE TIME….I DO NOT KNOW TO DELIVER WHAT IS HAPPENING OVER THERE IN MORE SIMPLE WORDS..

123 jammy July 7, 2010 at 4:11 pm

hello everybody,
its very nice to see all of your determination to join defence.
I appear 4 times in SSB all for air force first 2 time conference out and than screen out. What I learn from my past experience is that for Fresher there is great chances so you must do some coaching or preparation before going first time bcoz they expect not to much from you if you perform well they will 100% select you but dont show overconfidence and please maintain postive attitude. Remember think positive and write positive in cycology not a single negative word.
And for repeater there level goes too high. The most important thing they need is English. ENGLISH matters lots your English must be excellent and also way of communication. now from 2 ssb I was not been able to clear my screening only because of english. As gd matter lot in screening for repeater as everyone say perfect story.
so I hope this would help you if you like this than bless for me to get selected as now I have only final try left so I working hard on my english as my English is not good you might feel that on this submit.

ALL DA BEST 2 ALL OF YOU ;)

Everytime my group members after noticing my performance told me that i am the most deserving in the group & will definitely get recommended but max selection happened from my batch leaving me. Even those who asked me “what to do at diff. stages” got recommended but i was not. I am very much confused about the criteria of selection & in a state of despair. I don’t feel like going again. Hi frnds i am new here.
As Subhasis said all, i totally agree but in case of psychological tests atleast we must b aware of the types of sentences we may get and to make so.
But in case of picture perception tests, just going there without any preparation may affect ur result. Here for this u need to analyse ur current environment and always think +ve, thin will help alot or atleast u should know that u have to write +ve aspects in the story. If u just have learned some stories and write them there by moulding a little, this might work only for about 6 to 7 stories but after that the person inside u will appear on the sheet.
Anything needed to b improved here, plz reply for that.

Dear Sir,

I have been reading your blog with interest for quite some time. A lot of information for aspirants and parents. Thanks a lot and keep it up. I also happend to get a few advice from you. As per your advice, after delibrating a lot, my son has decided to stay back in Naval Engineering, rather than going for Naval Architect. Thanks again.

Once again a small advice required. I am working outside India and my wife stays with me as well. My son used to visit me while he was studying in India. Now his passport is cancelled as Minor. By the time he wanted to apply for a new passport, he got selected in Navy and gave all the original certificates there. Now that he is getting trained in Navy as an officer, is it possible for him to apply for a Passport through Navy and can he visit us during his holidays after each semester. Is there any restriction, being in defence? Who is the right person to contact in this regard.

Thanks again
BK

Mr. nair, i m pleased to know about your son. now that he is a cadet and is studying in academy , he comes under the navy act and as per it if he wishes to go outside India for his personal reasons , he has to avail a passport through the navy and inform the naval headquarters about his foreign visit. though it may sound very complicated, it is the right procedure and he must try to follow it. availing a passport through the navy is not so tough, but taking into consideration his little experience in the service and that he is only a cadet the formalities become a bit tough for him. but still by going through the proper channel ,that is through his divisional officer, training commander, commanding officer, things can be easily done. but to tell you one thing ,when i was a cadet i went to Singapore without informing the academy/ navy…. but it was in my time…so nothing is difficult, tell him to approach his divisional officer and pressurize him to help your son in this regard

Hello Sir,
Could you give me some tips on how to greet/interupt someone in the PPDT/GDs? Specially if someone is getting hyper very frequlently and is unwilling to listen to anyone. Also, suitable phrases/point to put in the PPDT discussion as in most of the cases picture would be a blurred one and story may differ depending on ones perception. For example, it may look like a fire in the fields to one and explosion or aircrash to another. So, how could I justify that it’s a fire in this case?
Thanks in anticipation

Hi Sir, I have my SSB in Oct 20 for TGC-112 course and frankly speaking..
1. I am a lazy person and I m trying to change that habit and I dnt have a particular hobby as such but
2.Bhangra (bagged 2 stage performances, choreographed the second one which was by best achievement and best day as i m not a professional dancer)
3.football (no achievement)
4.and recently helping my mother In kitchen( due to unemployment) , 5.internet browsing,
6.news watching( due to my SSB interview),
7.watching movies
are some of the things which i repeatedly do.

Q1.So plzz tell me wht i should probably convey whn abt my hobbies whn asked.

Q2.My weakness is tht I sometimes stammer while speaking nt due to confidence though. I knw wht i hve to speak somtimes i just get stuck ( bt i tryin to improve tht too). by talking in front of the mirror.

Q3.I also have myopia of -10. But cant risk the operation before selection due to financial reasons.
I am fully aware of the SSB format.

In a nutshell, I am motivated to change, as i feel tht if I want evrthng arnd me to change thn I will have to lead by example.
Q4.I saw a post for B.tech and I applied and tht `s my reason to Indian army. Will it be ok if i write this…? If not thn plzz suggest.

Respected Sir,
I went to SSB 3 times for 10+2 entries at bhopal itself. Everytime i reached till conference & sent back. I want your precious advice & know your perception about my case.

Hi Sir,
I have my SSB on 20th Oct and frankly speaking i am a little lazy man but i am trying to change it. I dnt have any particular hobby as I like to pursue wtht i feel like at the moment.
Bt usually I like bhangra( performed two times on stage). i choreographed the 2nd time bt I am no professional in dance.
i hve read few novels too, and recently i hve started to learn cooking frm my mother( Coz im unemployedand at home). I keep a track of current events.
1.) Wht must i convey in hobbies should i just write NIL.
2.) I am having Myopia of -9 and currently taking Ayurvedic treatment and the choice of LASIK would be after selection due to financial issues.
3.) Should i just bluntly tell i want to join army coz a post is available . or say I want to see more of my country and i hve been to many places bt fr sum work. and tht want to learn the diff languages. I currntly cn speak Marathi, little (tamil, gujrati, Punjabi) apart frm Hindi and english.
4.) My weaknness- I am trying to get rid of little stammering( nt due to confidence though sumtimes i just get stuck) by speaking in frnt of mirror.

In a nutshel, i want evrythng arnd me to change and for tht i will have to change 1st so i have to lead by an example.

and yes i am a little chubby but nt obese.
Plzz provide me your views.
looking forward to hear frm u.

1. never write nil for hobbies..think ..you will find interest in something
2. i donot know
3.if u say so then you will be just sent home………..

from your questions i find that you have a very casual attitude..with this attitude you can never make it up to army…you need to change

leadership traits are in a person and he may not realise it or may not be aware of it also..ssb will find it out and take you if you have it in you…if you are a sports person and always like to be a captain of a team it is a indication of leadership quality…if you find some of your classmates fighting then if you rush to seperate them ..then it means that you have it in you

I appeared for SSB in 2 AFSB Mysore (M-NDA/81333). These were some of the questions i confronted in my Interview:

1. Which places do you recommend me to visit, if I come as a tourist to ur hometown?
2. Who are your best friends and what do you like in them?
3. What you friends like in you?
4. What do you wish to change in them and they wish to change in you?
5. If you face a problem, with whom would you express it first?
6. Do you have a girlfriend?
7. If I go and meet your mother, what will she say about you?
8. What do you think, are your positives/negatives?
9. What kind of people do you like/dislike?
10. What do you want to do in life if defence is ruled out as an option? [HERE DONT TRY TO SHOW OFF YOU ARE TOO INTELLIGENT, TECHNICAL ETC. DONT POSE AS IF YOU HAVE A LOT MORE OPTIONS AND YOU ARE HERE AS IF THE DEFENCE NEEDS YOU... BE VERY DIPLOMATIC AND ANSWER SUCH THAT YOU INDIRECTLY CONVEY IN A SUBTLE WAY, RULING OUT DEFENCE IS OUT OF QUESTION. BUT DONT MAKE HIM CONCLUDE THAT YOU DONT HAVE AN OPEN MIND.]
11. Which is your favourite sport? What do you play generally?
12. What will you do when you are absolutely free?
13. Tell me your daily routine (if you ever have one).
14. What quality in you bothers you too much that you have been longing to change?
15. Why do you think I should select you? Do you think you have an edge over others? If yes, what is it that makes you feel so?
16. Two national and international news you are following and 2 questions on each (generally tough ones)…
This is all what I can remember now (After 20 long months)… Ill post the rest whenever they strike.
NEVER LIE IN ANY ASPECT…THEY ARE TRAINED AND EXPERT LIE DETECTORS… I SAW MY FRIENDS DRIVEN TO NUTS FOR DOING IT.. DONT WASTE WORDS; LET EVERY WORD MAKE SENSE. ALL THE BEST!!!

3. Tell about your current job, company, kind of work, salary?

4. What you know about Indian Navy? Any naval ships? How many submarines? Chief of naval staff? Who was the previous CONS?

5. Any ship manufacturing company in Kolkata? (i stayed there fr 2 yrs.. so ths question came)

6. Who all are your best friends? Why?

7. First choice – Army or navy?

8. Any latest incident/news in past 15 days regarding armed forces?

9. Who all are there in your family?

10. What all exams you wrote, like AIEE, NDA, etc? How many time tried for forces? and so on..

hi sir..
Right now I am a Software Engineer in MNC in Gurgaon. I’ve been attended the batch F-FPM/80537 of 7SSC(P) at 1 AFSB,dehradun in month of June 2010. My interview had been taken by President & OIC of the Board. The time of my interview approx. 1hr 30 min. All my test were perfect. But unfortunaility I am not recommended. So I want to share some interview questions. These are as follows:

1) Tell me about your time 10th onwards.
2) Your favorite or unfavorite teachers during schooling.
3) About my academic record.
4) About my friends & best friends.
5) About my role in games & sports as well as other activities like cultural, technical & adventurous(like scouting & adventure sports).
6) About my family including my parents, siblings & their occupation.
7) How can I help to them also.
8) Any incident which was not told to my parents.
9) Do you have any girlfriend?
10) Do you have habit of smoking or drinking?
11) Are you really interested to join armed forces? If yes then why?
12) Are you not tried to join armed forces in earlier by NDA or TES?

I hope these questions can help for new candidates who will go for SSB.

One query on about SSB:
Sir I’ve been attended SSB 2 times for Army & 2 times for Airforce. But only one time I was moved to conference. And I’ll also go for testing in SCE,allahabad on 26th Jan 2011. So at this time can I recommend in there or if you have any guidance to me then please mail to me.

Thanks

253 Kumar January 11, 2011 at 3:03 pm

your form will be with the upsc and there is hardly any hope of getting your form no. from them..as far as your option of airforce, there might have been a mistake but noe it is too late and we actually can not do much about it…if you try to call up IHQ then may be they will give you some reply, but rest assured that nothing much will come up in the mean time also…regarding your change of address, you might well as inform your post office regarding your change of address and give an application to transfer all the letters addressed in your name at your previous address to reach you in your present address…

269 Kumar January 30, 2011 at 9:20 am

@ rohit .. the army people come to some selected colleges in almost every state and a good amount of colleges are called at a college. So u have to be aware about when and where army is coming for campus. If army has come to ur college before also(ask ur seniors) , then chances are that it will again visit . otherwise it may come to a college near u and your college will be invited for participation. This information can be collected from placement cel of your college as army communicates to your college and tells them the date and venue.

you can also apply directly after seeing the UES notification. In this case u will be called through a letter individually , and centre will be allotted to you for your pre-SSB interview.

dolita noronha, sorry for replying so late……the best way to build confidence is to have good communication skills and have knowledge of what you are speaking about…if you know about any thing then you will speak well…if you have doubt on the same thing then you will not be confident…………so brush up your knowledge on your subjects, general knowledge, etc

hi sadanand,
1. there is no such probability……i would say that the maximum probability is in the first time(because a person does not change drastically over a period of time he remains the same). so if you think you can do it ,then might as well as do it in the first time
2.yes you can apply for as many as possible at the same time

Hello,
Thanks a lot for all the above info.
I have some more doubts like…
1. i am operated for Nasal Polyposis.. So, is it acceptable in SSB?
2. i am overweight by 7 KG. Do i need to work on it?
3. This is my first and last chance of SSB. If they ask what will i do if i do not get recommended…Is it OK to say that i am a Doing M.com so if do not get recommended i’ll do MBA, hunt for a good job. and then will get into Indian army by joining TA.
4. In Academies from 10th till my graduation my percentage of marks has always been downgrading. So, Please tell me what should be the appropriate reason to tell them. In my case it was due to change of my social enviornment as i switched to Junior College from APS after 10th which made me a bit casual about studies and indulged in sports and other activities like marathon, tracking, volleyball, basketball and organising college events.
5. Also please tell me when i would be receiving the SSB call letter as i hv clearedthe CDS II exam of Sep 2010 for OTA entry.
5. At last please tell me how is my Communication as u might have got some Idea after reading this much of stuff.

Thanks & Regards

Sir,
I have a question, very different from others. I have tried for SSB twice (for TGC entry) and was conference out .This was last to last year, after which I work as an employee in a defense Public Sector Unit. This job has a service contract of 3 years because of which they have kept my marksheets for 3 years. ( I had to take up this job during recessions, as no other job was available.)

I have asked you this question earlier also almost 1 year back, and you suggested to ask them for a NOC. but Sir, the issue is they are not giving me NOC saying i am in a bond period. Also, i do not want to risk my job by going for a legal action in court.

I have taken out a second copy of my 10th and 12th mark-sheets (duplicate) from CBSE board and i have all my semester mark-sheets of engineering, but i do not have my engineering degree.

Sir, i want to go without NOC for the next SSB, as i have no other option. Can you please let me know if they will allow me without my engineering degree and 10th,12th’s second copy marksheet from CBSE ??

Also, can you guide me as to where i can enquire about this issue of mine, so that i get to know whether i can appear for SSB or not ? As this will be my last attempt because of getting over-age.

Thanks,

forgive me for not mentioning my name.

hi,
i got call to attend ssb interview for ssc observer post in indian navy in next month.I am very interested to work in forces. But i am fearing about injuries which i may not sustain there being girl because now only am suffering back pain.
can you give me suggestion in joining navy by leaving the current job in software company?

306 Kumar February 22, 2011 at 10:13 am

dear shewta,
see it is a tough job, no doubt about that…specially observer, it is a combat proffession…and people who are air crew are prone to back pain more than those who are not…so i suggest you do not join this looking forward to smooth life and comfort…if you are that adventurous type and wants to see the real combat then go ahead and join it

dear Anand ,most of the interview questions revolvwe around your own personal bio data and about yourself and the GK part of it from the current magazines and news papers that the interviewing officer goes through….he does not have the time to prepare for interviewing you guys

309 Mohammed Zameeruddin February 22, 2011 at 10:10 pm

I got recommended from the 17 SSB, I have a message for all the aspirants given to me by the Dy. President on how to give your best at SSB.
Need to focus on few major things.
Communication Skills: You need to have good communication skills, You would use it a lot of times during the interview.
Technical Knowledge: Have a good knowledge on the basics of the subjects that you have graduated in.
General Knowledge: Go through the current affairs and general things.
Physical Fitness: You don’t have to be muscular, Just keep yourself fit by running and playing some outdoor games.
These things will not only improve you confidence among your peers and during the interview but also gives you an edge among others.

They would like to have people with Officer like qualities, Not intelligent and strong guys.
Hope this helps.

sir ,is it advisable to take coaching prior to my first SSB as these people dont need trained persons and easily they can detect it and my overall marks will be readuced in interview. plz give me an advice.

Reply

311 Kumar February 28, 2011 at 2:10 am

i my personal advice it is not good to take coaching…a recent study shows officers who have been selected in armed forces after taking coaching are very much depressed and would like to leave the srvice in the initial part of their career…and also they start underperforming and are actually a liability to the service…the point is the coaching only makes you pass the ssb and not prepare you for the armed forces …so in my view if you go unprepared and pass the board with little bit of guidance then you are to shine very much in service and in your life…there is othing wrong even if you take some assistance from books which guide you to clear your ssb exams

312 Anand S February 25, 2011 at 12:26 pm

Thanks Mohammed Zameeruddin, thank you very much.
i’ve got my SSB on 8 April at Bengaluru Selection Board. Your message is helpful for my performance & confidence level.

2.My final yr exam is on april. is there any chance of reappearing if my interview date is clashing with exam date?

I have just got call letter for interview at Banglore for 20 UES. I have one query related to the visual standards for selection. In the interview letter it was that the candidate should not have any visual defects(corrected by glasses). But on Internet I read an article which was saying that myopia up to 1.5 corrected with glasses is allowed. So can anyone please inform me about the official visual standards that are followed at SSB for selection of candidates. And in which stage of selection process they check our vision and other fitness. Please giude me.

Its nice to c the experience of every one .. but the cruel fact of this mysterious SSB is .. ur act during ur five day stay with board.. till date i have given 9 SSB infact AFSB and again going for 10th time for airforce.. My experience says that .. u cant change ur basics for one exam to another.. no matters how u prepared .. no matter how is ur GK.. wat matters ur presence of mind and a bit luck .. ya sure luck is there .. no one can be sure for selection .. but everyone can expect positive outcome.. i did every damn thing .. took lots of suggestion and guidance.. the more guidance and ideas .. will go for more acting and return at the end will be a big Zero.. be watever u r and proud on ur individuality, luv urself and be honest .. if it is meant for u .. u will get it .. but god sake dont act or lie in front of them ..yes u can lie.. but be calculated .. means if u did some crime in ur past .. dont reveal that .. but never give chance to hold ur weakness.. Psychology test is very important but other test are important to.. even a conference of 2 mins can change ur destiny .. be gentleman for urself not for board .. if u r smart u can drive the interview in ur way ,, the way u reply to first question .. the next question will follow ur earlier answer.. GTO is smart enough to know ur involvement and approach towards the things..
Believe me , the crux of all my words is just luv urself and act like the way u r .. rest destiny .. if selected .. then will surely become guardian of our own sky/water/ motherland otherwise will try to join the company of Our most respect president APJ AbulKalam, our best actors Amitabh Bachan and Sharukh khan ..

Taking off now.. with the hope of a would be a guardian of our sky ..
take care and plz share ur valuable inputs too.. we desperately need it ..

hi everyone
i am a keen follower of this blog and want to share my experience of the ssb
my ssb center was in Allahabad for the tgc-113 entry. my board was the 18th selection board. we started with the screening test. first there was the Iq test
then there was a picture perception test!! the picture shown was crystal clear and not a blurred one. the picture was of a man holding his 2 year child in arms sitting beside a beach.
I wrote a story, a positive one and then narrated the same with full confidence .
Then there was a group discussion on the story where we had to come to common story which we couldn’t do. I didn’t speak anything and was still selected ,i really dont know why. Also during my IQ test the booklet given to me for the 2 tests separately had almost all the answer ticked marked already i just solved 2 or 3 questions and to verify the genuiness of the answers that were ticked and then copied all the answers that were already ticked.
we were 51 of us and then after the screening test we were reduced to 30
The next we had the the Physiological test which was quite easy and i was able to complete all the questions except 8 or 9 srt”s. I had my Interview on the very same evening the questions asked were

Tell me something about your–
Schooling ?
Friends ?
Parents ?
Siblings ?
Financial condition of home ?
Percentage in 10th,12 and graduation ?
asked if i had any friends in my locality ?
What do you do to spend time together with your family at home ?
What type of movies i like to watch ?
What all sports and extra curcillur activities i took part in ?
Incase i have a problem Whom do i go to for seeking help ?

Then asked me to give any suggestion regarding my stay at the centre?
What is your daily routine?
Whats happening around the world and in India?
Then The IO asked me if I want to ask him about anything ?
He asked me if he had asked all the questions related to my personality?
He asked me About my Job and any problems that i face related to my job ?

the next day was the GTO tasks which were very interesting . I completed 9 tasks out of ten in the individual obstacles. Other then that there was the group discussions, Group task , Progressive group tasks ,Half group task , snake race Lecturrate, command task ,Final group task
All the tasks were very interesting and i enjoyed them all.
The GTO took 2 days to complete and the next day was the conference and as expected i wasnt selected.

I wanted to ask you that, in the rapid fire round in the personnel interview i was asked 5 or 6 questions in 1 go and i was able to answer only 2 or 3 of them and aked the IO for the questions again and he repeated the questions again for me in all the three rapid fire rounds .

So my question is that what quality is bieng judged during the rapid fire round and is it necessary to answer all the questions serial wise and what if the candidate is not able to retain the questions that were asked ? Can it be held against the candidate????

Dear Mr. Kumar,

I just went through your blog and it was extremely helpful. I have just cleared my CDS exam held in the month of Feb 2011 and am waiting for the SSB call letter. I have a few doubts. This is my first attempt and am glad i could clear one hurdle. Joining the armed forces has been a dream for me like many of my friends above. I smoke occasionally, would that be a problem for my selection? and how vigorous would the physical tests be? this i am asking because, when i had cleared the exam for the post of SI in CPO i was asked to run 1.6Kms in less than 6 minutes which seemed a herculean task for me.

As mentioned by many above your contribution to our success is unmeasured. Awaiting your reply.

Thank you!
Bharadwaj

sir,
I would like to share my ssb interview experience i had in 22ssb bhopal.
Before this ssb i attended one more ssb but was screened out.But I did not
loose hope and went for second time.Second time I was conference out.
Still I am happy even if i did not got selected i got to learn a lot from my
mistakes. One thought i read at the center has motivated me to keep trying
that was” Success is the result of hardwork,a lot of preparation and
learning from failure.”

Interview questions asked to me by Interviewing officer were:

1.about education qualification,% in degree,12th and 10th.

2.what you do keep yourself physically fit?

Sir,please can you tell how ques 2 can be answered.I answered as i played
games like dodgeball,kho-kho during school time.I participated in relay race
and throwball matches in school. But now I dont play any games.

3.why u could not clear ssb last time?

Sir,I answered i did not prepare well and did not speak in gd so screened out.
He then asked how was your gd this time.i answered it was good i was
screened in.
Sir,can you tell how we should answer ques 3.The way i answered was
correct or not.

4.what would you do if you dont get selected?
I told i will try again until i succeed.

5.tell about your good friends, not good friends, teachers you liked, dislike and
why?
Sir,IO asked to name good friends i named a few.He then asked to tell why
they are good.I told they are helpful, understand my feelings so they are my
good friends.I named not good friend also.I told those friends of mine they
dont help me.I help help them whenever they need and they donot listen
to me when i talk to them so they are not good.

Sir,can you tell how we should answer ques 5.The way i answered was
correct or not.

6.Which friends you made at ssb, name them and best among them.
7.tell about your strengths and areas of improvement, achievements.

8.which qualities your friends would like to see improved in you?

Sir,while answering this question qualities that should be mentioned should it
be similar those mentioned in piq areas of improvement.Actually Sir,i told
that i get emotional at times.then IO asked when did u last time get
emotional?and why?I told when i not able to achieve something i get
emotional.Sir,i did not mention this in my piq.Is is that we should not
mention being emotional at times while qualities your friends would like to
see improved in you is asked.

9.which branch would you like to choose SIGNALS,EME,ENGG.

Sir,can you tell how we should answer ques 9.
10.which subject you took in higher classes and why?
11.tell about last month or recent news.your views on it.
12.is grading system in exams good or bad?
13.what are your views on khap panchayat?
14.who are you closer to mother or father and why?
15.how is selection centre and have you visited any place here?
16.which place is good your hometown or your present place and why?
17.how was your stay at selection centre?
18.which gto task u did well?
19.do you have any suggestion to give?

Sir,please answer the questions I have asked. Also in ppdt gd how to start gd?
in gto tasks what things to be kept in mind while performing tasks?
Sir, i will be very thankful if u could answer the questions i asked at the earliest.

388 Kumar August 15, 2011 at 12:22 pm

sheetal answering your questions::
2. your answer was a relatively a decent answer …you might have told that you still take some time to play some games …but from the nature of this question i understand that it might be a genuine question asked on seeing your extremely fit condition or a sarcastic question asked because you might be very fat!!!!
3. a fine reply
5. try to avoid tellin anything about bad friends..a friend is a friend.. you need not have to actually elaborate so much about your not so good friends…having enemies, not so good friends are not a good trait/quality.
9. you must kow what to answer , i cant spoon feed you for even this!!!
a little bitf research is required on your part

However i could not get commissioned as i met with an accident in OTS, CHENNAI then, Now OTA. CHENNAI. Later i settled as teacher. I was always inquisitive of the psychological tests and read a lot of psychology books with a special emphasis on protective tests, TAT, WAT, SRT etc., After understanding the importance of these tests thoroughly, i started to train my students for SSB. I struck with good success, those of you are interested to learn or get more information, i invite to reach me through my e mail id. ylraovizag@gmail.com

Hi All, Well i went thru all the comments.. Its nice to see tht blog is so helpful.. Thnaks to the creator :)
I attended my SSB for Airforce in Mysore this november n m recommended :)This was my 1st attmept. The questions i faced were:
About family, education, friends, best friends, place i stay,Y airforce ?Y dint apply after10+2 if u were so passionate (as i applied after my degree),Whom do u approach during any problem? Evn after being bad in maths y chose Engineering(Answer was Sir I know m not good in maths but i dont even consider that i am BAD in Maths n i knew tht i will clear my Engineering) .
As m working currently as software eng. he asked me abt my job likes and dislikes abt it. Also dont u think yo eng.branch subjects are wasted becz u r in software nw?(i was elctronics grad)(Ans:Sir i am here bcz i know all those knowledge m gonna use in AIRFORCE) .
And ya during conference they asked u share yo name with famous personality tel us one common thing .(ANS: Sir they r best in their field n m confident i will be same in mine).
Also asked me to give suggestion to improve facilities of canteen. (Ans: No suggestions sir) bt he asked me is it PERFECT? I told sir their is room for improvement in every field bt ya m satisfied with the facilities available.

Finally to all aspirants what i wud say is never never be nervous, Be very confident. If u feel u r bad in facing ppl attned coaching classes(i wud sugegst dont listen to classes, it wud confuse to n may hamper your real YOU) Just attend classes to know whom u have to face n to interact with like minded competitive ppl :)

All the best Frnds :)

Mona, repeaters dont get selected is a myth!!!!! if you are not getting selected,it is because you lacked something at that point of time!!!!may be with time you can improve and do better , that is what we think!!!! dont get disheartened!!!!only losers quit!!!!! if you are coming again for a SSB then it means that you are not quitting!!!

vinoth kumar, 10% up down is generally accepted. Sometimes upto 20% is accepted if the doctor feels that you have bone weight or muscular build etc…but 40% more is a little difficult. you must work hard to reduce your weight

Please suggest me Sir.

Raja, i did not fully understand your question. But there is no requirement of aggressiveness…you must have your spirits about and be alive. you need not shout on others and yell at others. you may be loud. there is a difference between loudness and shouting

Hello sir,
This is my first visit to this website and after reading the above querries I feel that you are really doing a great job. This thing is really helping the defence service aspirants.
Sir, I attended SSB on 11th Nov in allahabad and I was screening out. Everything till picture peception and story writing was fine for me but during Group discussions I was wondering that when everyone has written their own story then how can it lead to a successful discussion as everyone was trying to prove that their story was good. Anyways, I am also aware of the fact that the method of selection is very apt. I accept that something went wrong in my methods. Kindly suggest me how can I tackle this, as my next SSB is coming very soon on 20th Feb.
Thanks

Right Eye – 1.25×87
Left eye – 0.75×89.
Now my vision is good but I would like to know whether I could clear medical test or not. My Age is 24 and I undergone surgery at my age of 21 and automatically I would like to try for Indian Navy through Non UPSC entry. I also know that am not eligible for UPSC entry as the age limit is barred and candidates undergone lasik will be rejected. Kindly clarify my doubt.

hello sir, very pleased to see here that I got some point where I can share my queries and doubts. Actually I am BBA graduate having science stream in +2. I had applied for post of pilot observer for july 2012 batch and also got the call letter to attend it on 20th april. I am very much happy and enthusiastic about attending the interview. But I am finding out that in some places they have mentioned to go to the place with BE certificate. The eligibility criteria was graduation in any stream. I have tried all the contact numbers and even the e mail ids but couldn’t get a help. Please make me clear about it if you can. Thank you sir.

After having attended so many SSB I got exp by analysing those who got recommended. So please if u have that passion to join defence pls dont stop urself n keep trying until u succeed. Specially repeaters like me dont lose heart.

Thanks a lot Sir, I appreciate and respect your views. It will be plesure for me to help you :-) .
“A right advice at the right time” is very necessary for these young potential minds who are full of energy and ethusiasm and who have a dream of serving their nation with Pride.
You are doing is a fantastic job by guiding them as taking out time from daily life for something like this is not easy for many people.
Hats off to you Sir !!!!

Sir i am not able to clear the SSB till now but I have motivated and encouraged few friends to join Defence and Some of them have cleared SSB and are serving the Forces Today. I know how nice it feels to see that your advice helped someone in achieving his/her dream.
Some people say to me that you are a failure, so dont try be a leader to advice others about ssb as till date you r not able to crack the SSB.Few say that stop thinking of SSB now. But this encourages me, motivates me to try again again until i succeed.

Definitely i will share my views with you and if possible mail you my experiences in detail.

Hey Prafull,
As you have filled the form online. Your form is submitted into the database without sending the and while sending the SSB call letters the names of the appropriate candidates are directly taken from the database irrespective of the Forms manually send by post to RK Puram New Delhi.
I think u must be in final year now, so u r eligible for appearing in the SSB. If you are going for the SSB , there they will check all your documents before conducting tests and at that time you can tell them that you are in final year now. Take a Permission letter from the Director/Head of college in which you are studying stating that you are a final year student and the probable date of declaration of Final Year Results in future. Take all the Educational Certificates and the above mentioned letter from your college , I think you will be allowed to appear in the SSB. Please let me know if you have any more queries :)

All the Very Best to you. Do well in all your SSB Tests .

Akhilesh

Respected sir,
I have cleared my written round in IAF. I wanted to know the detailing of SSB.
According to the given height to weight ratio i was supposed to be 55 kgs, but I’am 65kgs though having a lean, fit and worked out atheletic body. Is it necessary that it should be reduced to 55kg?. I might grow very weak even if i rip in next 40 odd days to 55.
Please help. Thank you.

the first thing….please come the day b4 call date….that way u can stay fresh for the testin day….cos belive me
..the first day will drain all your power out…
u ll see most ppl comin in casual clothes…but i ll advice u to be in your best formal attire….remember the first
impression is what matters….and i am sayin so…cos they wont giv u time to change and refreshen urself….ull be
directly taken to the examination all….
here are my tips to u…
1.der are 2 sets of 50 ques each and 27 mins for each…that makes 100 ques in 54 mins flat…..its actually the
aptitude of DRDO papers (1974 and 1975)…so if u find it…or know the level….u ll crack those problems easily

2.i attempted 89-91 ques …cleared phase 1 also one f my friends could manage only 60…still he cleared…while
another with 70-75 couldnt clear….. the fact is as it was stated by the conducting officer…they look for quality
and not quantity…so guys concentrate on givin correct answers…but keep an eye on the watch…

3.picture story writin…if ure sittin on front rows ull have an advantage of getting a good look on the picture and
better clarity….so u can act fast on the story..cos the pic is very very blurred ….now the important part….start
the story with the name u wish to give to central character…and also identify him with a characteristic quality.for
eg “sudhir was an intelligent business man’….”ravi was a studious boy” etc write as many characteristic quality u
can remember..and break it into sentences like ’sudhir was an intelligent buisness man .he was also very
diplomatic and broad-minded.” they say they giv u 4 mins for writin the story but belive me..they will say stop
30-40 secs before that..now u will have to discuss the story …say what u have written eEXACTLY that…refer
every character in the photo by the name…say slowly and keep it very abstract…cos the examiners give u only
15-20 secs individually for sayin ur story…and say DEFINITELY the characteristic qualities dat u have written in ur
answer book…

i GUARANTEE u will definitely clear phase 1….
in my batch 75 cleared out of 161 ppl cleared phase 1..and finally after 5 dayz 5 wer recommended out of the
remainin ppl for medicals …but remember one thing out of 4-5 recommended candidates
ONE CAN BE YOU !!!!….so never lose hope…..

i asked my friends includin neeraja..abt the % of aspirants who clear phase 1….the conclusion…ders no fixed
%..but dont think of it otherwise u ll get unnecessarily tensed….just believe in urself..even if 10 persons clear
phase 1…1 of them HAS TO BE YOU MATE…..

after clearin phase 1….the first thing ..n the most important….say WELL DONE to yourself and ur mates…
after havin a lunch u ll be told to assemble in the examination hall after 30-45
mins…again i remind u…no matter how much hostile the weather is … be always in your formals…if possible a
tie…remember u gonna be a officer so behave like one….it counts…

*************************************phase 2******************************

…now the game begins…..
u ll be given a 16 page answer book and it ll consist of 4 sections….

1.pp and story writin (11 pics and 1 blank …..4 mins 30 secs for each )
2.word association ( 60 words…..15 secs for each)
3.situation reaction test(SRT) (60 situations…30 secs each)
4.self description( abt urself,ur friend’s/teacher’s/parents opinion abt u,strengths,weaknesses,areas in which u

wanna improve…..15 mins for all)

general tip…please prepare for section1 and section 2 b4hand cos u ll not have any time to think…and hence buy
any book for ssb prep like pn joshi r others…atleast u ll get some ideas…

section1….

1.the story should always begin WITH A NAME of the character..say ram
2.higlight his qualities…as per requirement..for eg
if the pic shows military…write ram was brave,courageous…..
if pic indicates academics…write intelligent sincere and so on
3.write his dream..say IAS,engineer,DOctor,military etc..
4 how he achieved…by UPSC,IIT-JEE exams,MBBS entrance,NCC-SSB etc
5.now what he has bcm…officer, cheif engineer, medical dean , cheif etc

write damn fast….but remember ur handwritin reflects ur personality.. and physcologist are after that…hence
maintain it…but do complete each of the stories..

the last pic is blank…dis should be ur own story…but it should have a link wid the pic no 11 story…for eg comp
engineer on 11….then write like..”he developed a blah…blah software that…blah …blah

section 2..

take a deep breath…3…2…1….start…
60 words…..
each word for 15 sec….shown on the screen…..so u have to be lightning quick..u dont even have the time to
think…ur hands should do the thinkin …and dis can happen only if u come prepared…i attempted all of
them…most i found could attempt 50-55..not braggin…but true…

section 3..
each candidate will be given a booklet containing 60 situations, each of 2-3 lines and the total time alloted is 30 mins..so be fast to read the situations and write ur response accordingly..remember ur response has to just like an ideal person.. i.e fearless, prompt and justified..i am givin here some situations for ur understanding

SITUATION:you prepared for exams,all ur friends passed ..u failed,so u…
ANSWER: I will study more next time…

SITUATION:while takin a mornin walk in a park.. u noticed a man lyin unconscious..so u will
ANSWER:will give him first aid and take him to the nearest hospital…

remember u must try to answer as precisely as possible with minimum number of words..and dont use words like i can,i may, i should in your answers

section 4..
write each in separate paragraphs as described b4….and remember…dis answer book will be in front OF YOUR
INTERVIEWER so remember what u have written…u ll be asked then….and den if ders a mismatch…..u blow it
off….

about your weaknesses…..as was suggested by neeraja..write sometin which can be improvised….like…dont say
ur impatient,hottempered etc…but say like ure a bit weak on GK,languages etc…
thats all guys……again say WELL DONE to ur overworked brain..

now the answer books will be collected back…and now the officer will brief all of you abt the schedule and the
rules to be observed during ur stay at AFSB..
DONT EVER EVEN THINK OF smartin ur way around dis rules… dont give them a chance to point a finger towards
u…
and den ull fill some forms….it will be self explanatory and also be explained by the officer…..dats the first day….

VERY IMPORTANT….TRY TO BE POPULAR AMONG UR BATCHMATES…TRY TO INVOLVE URSELF IN EVERY
CONVERSATION..amongst ur batchmates…u ll soon find out soon why i say so….now……nextthin….
jump to ur beds….have a good sleep ….THE WAR HAS JUST BEGUN…..

dont panic if one test goes awry….the candidates are tested for totality in all the tests…one of my friends whose
lectuerette had gone somewhat ruffled was recommended….i ll see if i can make him write in dis blog…he will be
an inspiration for us..all

THE INTERVIEW
after day 1….in day 2 some ppl will have the gto round while others interview…and some others a day off…i had
the interview…so i ll discuss mine and some of my friends interview round now…dis was the best and most
amicable interview i ever had uptil now… u ppl will surely like this round ders no doubt abt it….
remember appearance always creates a impression on the interviewer..wear plain coloured shirt with a matching
tie if possible..and polished black shoe as the IAF officers themselves do… the perspiration should not be
apparent….cos the interviewer knows why a interviewee is perspirin even in a air condition enviroment…
after u enter the room…greet him..and dont sit until he tells so…. and then have a seat..say a thankyou and then
sit in an composed posture..u ll be sittin at 7-8 feet away from the interviewer…and hence can see u
completely…hence u should be in the best-est formals ever..now the interview starts…..
the interviewer will make u feel at ease by praisin u instantly b4 even u utter a word…cos u have given a brief
glimpse of yourself in the answer book in day 1… all the questions thereafter will mostly revolve around it…and
hence i said u should be careful while writin abt urself in the answer sheet in day 1..u ll suddenly feel that u re
only next to god…with this praises…but maintain ur calm and compose…acknowledge with ocassional nod and
thankyou..with a pleasant smile throughout the interview…..the general ques asked to me and my friends i have
written here

he will ask abt from where u cm from…what u presently do…abt ur mom and dad and siblings..friends…what
they think abt u…ur marks from 10 to graduation ( hence remember every damn % in ur academic life)..how do
u pass time on holidays..HOW U SPEND UR SALARY(after the boy’s explanation..the interviewer said u still have
3000 left…how cm u hav not accounted dat)….ur hobbies…dreams .ambitions…why the defence services..why
not other goverment/private jobs…why only the air force..how u came to know abt that opportunity….which
subjects u like…whats so special abt them…( a comp enggr was asked what features should i look on laptop
when i want to purchase one..and which of them is most important….why the base of laptop is hot…why only
duo and quad cores and not more than that….e mech enggr was asked why the ball swings..WHY CARS CANNOT
FLY…one of my friends joked if cars could fly den we would have called it an aeroplane and not a car..)…den
they ask for any extracurricular activities…strengths…weaknesses…how u like the ssb stay..the food..do u think
u will clear the ssb …if not then?…..
the current issues generall asked wer…. recession and its causes and effects.. 26/7 terror
attacks…naxalism……ram setu project..naxalism….role of india in third world countries…indian defence..india’s
stand against pakistan…role of china…the kashmir issues..dont worry abt it…thes topics are very much
speakable..but speak slowly n keep it as abstract as possibl….

some tips i say here…
dont put too much facial expression…dont waver ur hands unnecessaily….smile incessantly..speak what is only
asked abt u ..the more u ll blabber the more u ll be drawing urself into ditch…hence elaborate only when asked
for…..dont ask or accept a glass of water no matter how dry u re…dont move in ur chair…dont lean forward …if
u dont understand or listen to the question ..REQUEST him to repeat.. answer slowly…and again
abstractly….dont look away from the interviewer…get up only after he says..the completion of the
interview..thank him..greet him..

yups…dats it…another round over…get outta der….now loosen the knot…
if ure the startin no….the interview will start with u…and u ll soon be relieved of it ..otherwise…sometime wait
uptil 3-4 hrs biting ur nails..
anways…u ll njoy it……

day 3..mine was a much needed holiday…get outta here… explore the city…hangout with ur buddies…but return
to the centre before the said time deadline….otherwize expect a song from the air force officer…. u will messup
ur chance….so be aware of it…

day 4..the GTO round begins….
1.group discussion
2.military planning
3.group task
4.half group task

be in ur pt uniform (all white..shirt…shorts..socks…shoes)..u ll be asked to carry
a pen today ( req’d for military plannin)..watches are not allowed…(so dat u cannot decide the duration..in the
name of 10 mins …dey ll gv u 5-7 mins..)

1.group discussion
after all f u are made to sit in a semicircle..the gto enters… u will be amazed to see how friendly he will be..will
introduce himself very humorously…den he will explain how u will have to face the rounds one by one ..very
briefly..den he will ask each candidate for intro—name, qualification, occupation, hobbies, greatest achievement

der are 2 GD’s ..for the first u will be given 2 optional topics … select one after a mutual discussion ..time for dis is
1 min or so…and confer ur decision to the gto
…den he will sit behind ur group…and tell to start..

always address ur group member by their chest no..and people in general by “gENTLEMEN…be within first 4
speakers…speak loudly and clearly in order to be heard but don’t shout…cos more or less everybody will try to
speak simultaneously … remember to maintain ur composure …dont get angry…dont contradict too
much…express your own ideas rather than contradicting others…take sides…and stick to your point of
view..dont change sides ever…address to everybody and not a specific person…dont ever look towards the
gto…make sense of whatever u talk…and speak the whole point…don’t allow anybody to interrupt in between….
remember ur performance depends upon group performance…hence u should explain diversified ideas in order
that the group covers the topic in all aspects …..

the second topic will be given by gto himself…u dont have any option now…
immediately start discussing on the same lines as said before…

some of the topics wer terrorism, automobile market, role of agriculture in todays economy, transparency in
supply and demand market, indian democracy, girl child, educational reforms, influence of media etc

2 military plannin

der will be a pre-drawn printed map on the black-board…u ll be told to observe for 30 secs or so….mostly in all
cases …in the map der will be 2-3 villages and 2 or more cities (which are also referred to as district
headquarters),railway tracks,stations,roads-highway(called as metallic roads and motorable) and kacha roads
(non motorable), rivers,forest,temple…dats it….

the gto will den explain the narrative …in all stories the structure of narrative is more or less the same..
u re a group of friends…gone for picnic/visit/camp/…at a village/forest…. ..the time is 9 am…suddenly…a
person drowns…somebody gets robbed…injured/killed at an accident ..terrorist tryin to blast or remove fish
plates from railway track…dacoits plannin to steal/kidnap/harm…and the things u hav with u…cycles or cars,no
mobiles or no network on mobiles…

all of u will have the narration in front of u…and gto will ask u to clear any doubts after reading the
narrative…den ull be asked to hand over the narrative back to the gto…. all will be given a piece of paper..and
asked to write abt how u ll tackle the situation….

tips…prioritize the problems…..and its solutions……

first….immediate danger to life ( drownin ..injured ……to hospital and first aid)
second..the larger danger ( blowin of tracks… stop train at stn, police to nab culprits)
third-foil the kidnapping, stealing acts wid help of police
fourth–reportin FIR at police stn for robbery, and illegal acts already happened

remember police stations and hospitals if not indicated on the map is assumed to be present ONLY AT DISTRICT
HEADQUARTERS AND NOT VILLAGES..and mobile ntwk available in cities…or use the telephones in cities to
contact the police station, hospital for ambulance, railway station ..to stop the train from proceeding further till
further instructions….
write in paragraphs..abt 100 -150 words-10 mins for it

3 group task..
the gto officer will tell u the the objective…4 obstacles in 40 mins..dats a BIG LIE..( u get only 20-25 mins )most
of the times even b4 starting the 3 or 4 obstacle the gto asks the group to terminate the mission…but dont
worry… he has already noted down the individual traits….and also ppl get recommended..( me thinks they save
time )
as for the obstacle–the helpin equipment will be a plywood stretchboard, a bulley , 2 ropes and the load..all this
things have to be taken from startin point to end point of each obstacle before startin next…i cannot describe the
obstacles..der are atleast 25-30 types of obstacles each with different solution( der can be 1 or more solutions to
the same obstacle)..hence it does not make sense to describe here…. be always in the forefront…always make
urself heard within the group..dont start immediately..first see what is der in the obstacle in front of u and then
start..otherwise u ll repent later and the officer will definitely see dat..dont shout at one another…keep
calm….say accolades …like bravo…well done to ur members…refer every member by his chest number..and
speak as much as possible in english..though hindi is allowed …..my suggestion will be learn fulcrum…cantilever
arrangements..it will help u…whenever u have violated a rule u have to start agin from beginning…but dont
worry the gto will be very much lenient in dat….

here i ve copied some links from one of the post from our comrade chetan.. u ll get
an idea about what these tasks are i am talkin abt

(Post by chetan » Fri Sep 11, 2009 1:40 am)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvB2kPnuzOM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzSt88jmSWU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEvschLAtxk

4. half group task…

the group will be divided into half and each sub-group will be told to cross one obstacle(may be same or
different)…
dat will be all…for that day….one more day gone and the D-day is next day.. so brace urself for the next day…be
confident ..that u will clear it….even if one task goes wrong dont wory u can always cover it in another
task…..the totality of your performance matters…and it depends heavily on your group performance…. so
always think of yourself as a part of the unit….dont be a radical amongst your group….but try to give a effective
dimension to the group..and that can happen only when u are closely knitted with your group….

day 5…the heartbreak…

the final gto tasks were
1.lectuerette
2.command task
3.individual obstacles

1.lectuerette
u speak for 3 mins max…and u ll be sounded an warning bell 30 secs b4 the 3 mins are over..
some of topics i remember wer…internet, naxalism, single parenting, pollution, indian elections, judiciary system,
water conservation, golden quadrilateral, role of women today

u ll be given 1 min to think over the topic and den deliver the lecture in front f ur batchmates and the gto
tips….
–maintain eye contact with each of em turn by turn
–keep in mind atleast 5-6 pts..(u tend to fuh-get 2-3 )..n cover the topic broadly
–speak slowly with loud voice and balance ur intonation
–remember to start with…intro abt topic..body…conclusion (ask urself..what..why..where….how..it ll help u)

2.command task..
the gto will call each f u individually….ask u some informal questions…show u the obstacle (single) which u ll have
to cross… will ask u how many helpers(batchmates) would be required..(most of us guys..said 2)..
remember u re the commander so u ll give instuctions to ur batcmates…not them…

tips…
–never ask any question to ur helper..also dont ask for their feedback..
–make them do all the work..by instructing them with reference to their chest numbers

3.individual obstacles..3 mins total time alloted
u must have boy like agility…otherwise u ll i am afraid literally fail…so do some workout b4 comin to the ssb
i suggest..jumping,running (sprint),climbing,improve ur gripping strenth..

i ll try ma best in describin those…

1.parallel ropes== http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2ZkNn7fHRk
2.monkey crawling== move on a horizontal trunk
either walk on it (verrrrrrrrrrry tough)
hang upside down by grippin wid ur arms and legs and move (the easiest way)
sit on it..and push urself forward (u ll go insane..so dont try)
3.move thru inside of a hangin tyre==hold the tyre and put ur legs inside first and then the body
jump like a circus lion thru burnin ring
4.jump over a horizontal 3 ft high rope
5.jump from a the edge of the rising platform to a distance of 4-5 ft
6.run..climb the risin platform and climb the 8 feet wall (thin plywood board) ==pull your bodyweight to the top
wid ur shoulders..and then pull ur leg upward
7.climb a 8 ft high ladder onto a platform..jump to the platform (at 1 metre distance separated by air)..and then
to the sand below
8.move over a narrow tree trunk==walkin or sittin and pushin forward
9.climb a rope..der are no knots to help u climb..u climb it with ur sheer grippin power and then climb down and
dont slide down…
10..tarzan jump..climb a 8 ft high ladder..jump to the rope at 1-1.5 metres frm u….and climb down..

tips….
they can be done in any succession … i suggest 6..is tough but not impossible..attempt it last..9 and 10 are not for
faint hearted and have a pretty high probality..of injurin ur fingers..

our officer told..if u dont feel sure dont attempt..rather than make a fool of urself..
most of us could complete 7 of them.. each obstacles has different points..the tougher the more points..total 55
points..the toughest having 10 points…the easiest havin 1 point…

finally…the hour of the d-day arrives..
all are assembled in the hall..each one is called individually to the conference (14-16 ppl)…consistin of the
president in middle flanked on one side by interviewers n physcologists and on other the gto officers..all n their
uniforms..they ask u some informal questions…mostly abt ur experience in the ssb stay..
finally all of u are made to proceed for the lunch and again move to the hall after half hour or so…

and den the the words by the officer… “the gentlemen who have cleared phase two are…..chest no…chest no…
congratulations…”…so some leave with blue uniform reality..while others again with a dream… its life so accept it

hi sethu! a candidate should not have myopia at all if applying for flying branch.
if ur first choice is Air Force and if u have myopia then they will not recommend u for air force after ur medical examination. however u will still be eligible to join indian army or navy depending on the choice of service and ur name on the merit list. so don’t worry, just go and attend the ssb. do well and always think positive. you will surely succeed!
best wishes!

hello everyone!
I cleared my nda ssb in 2009 and joined nda in jan 2010. i wanted to join as air force cadet but i got navy. i was physically very weak and i didn’t get what i wanted. so i decided to quit. after 12 days i left NDA. i’m planning to write CDSE next year and i’m sure that i’ll clear the written exam. I want to know if quitting NDA in 2010 because of physical weakness will have a negative impact on my ssb in 2013? waiting for reply. thanks!

Hello Sir,

I have applied for Technical branch in Indian navy. My SSB date is on June 9th. I got your study materials yesterday. Thank you for the immediate service from your side.

Then, I have heard that for the candidates who have applied for Technical branch will have to face the Enginnering Knowledge Test in additoin to the other common intelligence tests during the course of 5 days at SSB.Kindly clarify whether I will have to face EKT at SSB or not and if yes, let me know on which day I will be having the test. I also heard that instead of intelligence tests we will be having EKT. I dont have a clear idea of the procedure regarding the technical branch entry.

I have selected General Service as my second option. What is the chance of getting into the General Service if I couldn’t clear the technical.

Kindly clarify my doubts so that I will start preparing for my EKT if I have to face.

thank you so much for the reply. sir, i still have a doubt. Don’t you think that i’ll be seen more like a quitter and this can have a negative impact. also i wasted 1 year of my career b’coz i withdrew frm an engineering college to go to NDA. after i came back, i had to again write an entrance test. but i got a better college and branch this time. sir, do u think this will have a negative impact on my ssb?

Hello sir,

I have a follow up on your blogs for quite a long time. Kudos for your work. Lemme come to the SSB experiences, I have given 6 SSB’s in various branches in army and navy in my college days. I took a break to stabilize my career and thought its time to get back to preparation for SSB. Now I have cleared the PSB for coast guard and my FSB will be scheduled by next month. Please advise short note on how can I take this up? I have started preparing SSB stuffs by buying the prep CD, simulators and mirror speaking. Anything more do i need to implement in my preparations? Looking forward for your replies. Thanks.

Aj, I have seen officers who are serving in the forces who have a bit of stammering. But I can not guarantee that you will be selected or not. Because the level of your stammering is unknown. Some people have stammering in front of strangers, some have stammering when they are nervous and some have problems with a particular type of pronounciation etc. So a specialist would be able to identify your problem and give you the required treatment to help you overcome it. Give it a try son!! Dont be worried. People have done it before and you can also do it regardless of your stammering.

I just got the call letter for SSB (PC) Law entry. I am rookie to SSB and I found your blog to be very helpful and interesting. One does not find so much information about SSB at one place very often. Thanks.

About me, I have always been generally confident and have always considered unending hope and unwavering confidence as my sole capital. However the screening tests, especially picture perception, thematic appreciation sounds a bit daunting to me. Am i expected to be imaginative an weave a positive story in gilt edged English or merely say something postive about what the picture is about ? Would my bad handwriting be a cause of concern ? I am currently preparing for my UPSC due in August. Would revealing that be detrimental ? My SSB is in April, I am quite sure the weigning machine points to the higher side. Should I start deiting and jogging tomorrow onwards ?

Thanks.
