In this article we will have a look at the 5 different Training Academies of Indian Armed Forces.
National Defence Academy
National Defence Academy is located at Khadakwasla near Pune, Maharashtra. It was established in 1954. It acts as the tri-service academy where cadets from all branches of Indian Defence i.e Army, navy, Air Force are trained. National Defence Academy trains the cadets who join the academy after their 10+2 examination. . They are trained here for the period of 3 years. On admission in the academy, a cadet is allotted one of the 18 squadrons which become his second home for the next three years. Cadets are given graduation degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University in B.A/B.Sc or BCs (Compter Science).
Apart from academics, cadets are trained in drills, PT and various other outdoor activities. The cadets undergo training for a total of 6 terms before graduating from the NDA. After passing out the cadets go to their respective training academies for further training. Army cadets join Indian Military Academy, Air Force cadets join Air Force Academy and Navy cadets join Indian Naval Academy.
Indian Military Academy
Indian Military Academy was established in 1932. It is located at Dehradun, Uttrakhand. Candidates join the Academy after their graduation or after passing out from the NDA. Here candidates are referred as Gentleman cadet. IMA cadets are organized as a Regiment with four training battalions each consisting of four companies. There are 4 battalions and 16 companies. Candidates are given training of 1years with an exception that the candidates who are selected via CDS exam of UPSC are given one and half year training. Candidates are given training in academics, drills, weapon firing, physical development, leadership development.
Air Force Academy
Air Force Academy was established in 1969 and it is located at Dundigal near Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. It provides training in flying, technical and ground branches. Candidates join AFA through CDS exam, after passing out from NDA and AFCAT exam. Cadets are organized into squadrons and there are 4 squadrons. Flying and Technical branch cadets are trained for 74 weeks whereas Ground Duty cadets are trained for a period of 52 weeks. It also provides flying and ground duty training to the officers of Navy, Coast guard and Army.
Indian Naval Academy
Indian Naval Academy is located at Ezhimala, Kerala and it was established in 2009. Naval candidates of NDA spend 2 years in NDA and then they are transferred to INA for the next two years. Candidates selected via CDS exam of UPSC as well as candidates selected via Short Service Commission are also trained at INA. Indian Coast Guard candidates are also trained here. All other candidates are given training depending on their courses. Candidates are assigned to squadrons. Each squadron consists of maximum 4 divisions with around 40 cadets in each division. Officers who are doing graduation go for additional specialization in areas such as naval aviation, submarine warfare at other naval schools.
Officer’s Training Academy
Officer’s Training Academy Chennai was established in 1963 and Officer’s Training Academy, Gaya was established in 2011. The OTA trains the candidate who opt for Short Service Commission. The training period is of 49 weeks. Candidates can join OTA after graduation. Candidates at OTA are trained in weapon training, map reading, drills, tactics, physical development, etc. By the end of training, cadets are able to handle any kind of weapon and can work even in toughest conditions. Both the insitutes are affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru University.
