Recently, a new transport aircraft joined the fleet of Indian Air Force and that aircraft is Boeing C-17 Globemaster III. Indian Air Force became the latest operator of this heavy-lift strategic aircraft which will give IAF most advanced humanitarian and strategic capabilities.

IAF took possession of this aircraft in USA at Edwards Air Force Base in California on Tuesday and flew it to home. The aircraft will reach Hindon airbase on June 17 (today) ahead of a formal induction into the fleet. Boeing will deliver another 4 aircrafts this year and the other 5 will be delivered in 2014.

C-17’s are capable of carrying the payload of more than 77 ton cargo and it can cover distance of more than 4400 km distance. It can land on a runway of just 3500 feet in length and 90 feet in width. The C-17 can be refueled midair and it would be networked with IAF’s air and ground assets. The cruising speed of C-17 is 830 km/h and it can touch the altitude of 28,000 feet.

C-17 Globemaster III aircrafts are capable of performing a wide range of operations from disaster relief and peacekeeping to troop movements from semi-prepared airfields. It will also boost up India’s military airlift capabilities to ferry battle tanks, artillery guns, troopers to battlefield and conflict zones. More than 102 paratroopers with their equipment can be airdropped.

After the delivery of 10 aircrafts, if IAF feels satisfied with the performance of the aircraft then 6 more aircrafts can be ordered. The aircraft was delivered in January 2013 for testing & training and previously, the aircraft did well during the rigorous tests for short takeoffs and night operations.
