The Reason Why Mr.X Failed in the SSB Interview 7 Times…

by Uday Kumar on August 27, 2012

Hi readers, recently I received a few mails from those who have given SSB earlier and have not been selected. They asked me various questions and one such question was from a B.Tech graduate from Delhi and he asked, “Sir do I still stand a chance after being screened out and conference out 7 times?”. I could feel the genuine dejection and depression he is facing now. He was in a state to give up all the ambitions and wish which he has nurtured right from his childhood. His consistent failure has made him to giveup. He lost all his confidence in him. Understanding his situation I replied to him,’YES, But only incase if you are ready to change yourself’. He didnot understand what I meant. I explained to him what he needs to do and where he has gone wrong.

I thought in the best interest of our readers I must share our conversation with all of you. Before I start let me make it clear. All of us want something bigger and greater in our life. Be it during our childhood days in school or our college days or in our adulthood or even in our oldage we want more. For eg; a student wants to score 90%, he is presently scoring 80%. Inorder to score 90% he needs to do something different. If he continues his same way of studying, same way of making notes, using same procedures to memorise and same time period for studies then I dont think he will be able to acheive what he wants.

In the same way if a business man wants his existing business to do better, he needs to workharder, needs to include more distributors, needs to find more customers, needs to do a research, needs to improve the quality of his product and basically needs to expand. This rule stands good for everyone. Including you and me.

I replied to the young man who had emailed me,” Son, if you have given 7 attempts and have not been selected in any of those it is because you have not changed yourself any single time. Everytime you visited you went with the same mindset, same principles, same thought process and finally as the same person”

I told him,”IF YOU WANT WHAT YOU NEVER HAD, YOU MUST DO WHAT YOU HAVE NEVER DONE“. I think my message was clear to him. He said that he has always prepared well every single time and every time he went for SSB, he was sure that he has prepared well. But due to badluck he could not get selected. Personally, if there is one thing I dont beleive it the word called LUCK. I told him the story of Abraham Lincoln which I would like to share here,

I am sure many of you must have seen the following explanation in the internet. But there is no harn in reading it once more. Please read it again. And don’t just read from your eyes, read it from your heart.

Probably the greatest example of persistence is Abraham Lincoln. Born into poverty, Lincoln was faced with defeat throughout his life. He lost eight elections, twice failed in business and suffered a nervous breakdown.

He could have quit many times – but he didn’t and because he didn’t quit, he became one of the greatest presidents in the history of the US.

Lincoln was a champion and he never gave up. Here is a sketch of Lincoln’s road to the White House:

  • 12 Feb 1809 – Born.
  • 1816 His family was forced out of their home. He had to work to support them.
  • 1818 His mother died.
  • 1831 Failed in business.
  • 1832 Ran for state legislature – lost.
  • l832 Also lost his job – wanted to go to law school but couldn’t get in.
  • 1833 Borrowed some money from a friend to begin a business and by the
  • end of the year he was bankrupt. He spent the next 17 years of his
  • life paying off this debt.
  • 1834 Ran for state legislature again – won.
  • 1835 Was engaged to be married, sweetheart died and his heart was broken.
  • 1836 Had a total nervous breakdown and was in bed for six months.
  • 1838 Sought to become speaker of the state legislature – defeated.
  • 1840 Sought to become elector – defeated.
  • 1843 Ran for Congress – lost.
  • 1846 Ran for Congress again – this time he won – went to Washington
  • and did a good job.
  • 1848 Ran for re-election to Congress – lost.
  • 1849 Sought the job of land officer in his home state – rejected.
  • 1854 Ran for Senate of the United States – lost.
  • 1856 Sought the Vice-Presidential nomination at his party’s national
  • convention – get less than 100 votes.
  • 1858 Ran for U.S. Senate again – again he lost.
  • 1860 Elected president of the United States.

The point to be noted here is that he was persistent. But what I want you to note here is that after every single time he has failed, he has switched over to something bigger. He didn’t go for the same old thing. After every defeat and every fall he fought back and elevated himself to the next level. So dear readers if you fail in your task or fail to achieve what you wanted then may be you must work more, work smart and work hard for the next time.

In our friend’s case, after every single failure he worked harder and worked more. But he did not work smarter. I told him the ways to work smarter.

I asked him if he had done any of the following after failing in so many SSBs.

  • Did you go for a SSB coaching institute after failing in somany attempts?
  • Did you make a note of every day activities and how you performed in each task during the SSB for future analysis?
  • Did you join any english speaking course ?(he said he was weak in this area)
  • Did you buy a Wren and Martin or any other English Grammar book? (he said his writing was bad)
  • Did you atleast buy my study materials from the blog?
  • Did you speak to someone who could give you some kind of insight about how to give the SSB tests?
  • Did you give a mock interview with your friends or anyone for that matter?
All his replies were in the negative with a big NO.
I asked him if he did not do any of this then what kind of preparation he was doing. I told him reading news papers and magazines alone will not help you clear the SSB. Finally our conversation ended and I could feel he was more confident and motivated. He is expecting his next SSB in October.
I wish him and all my dear readers all the best!

hello sir ,first of all a big thanks to you for this helpful blog to ssb aspirants. my son used to go through it for last two years. this year he finished his 12th and was called for ssb 10+2 entry for both navy and army. he passed nda1 also. this week he was recommended for 10+2 navy and presently under going medical. they said merit list will be out in dec only. sir my doubt is whether he should attend the ssb for army 10+2 sheduled on sep 19th and also the ssb for nda(not informed when) because i heard that if the name comes towards the last in meritlist its not necessary to get the admission in NA. also he has joined in an engg college recently. should he continue there till dec?
is it true that cadets from nda only reach upto very high ranks not the 10+2 cadets? sir eagerly waiting for your reply.

Sara, I would like to congratulate your son for getting recommended. Regarding whether he must go for the other 2 SSBs , I would 100% recommend him to go for the SSB. Because, every time a lot of candidates do not go the academy due to low merit. So I sincerely suggest that he must attend other 2 SSBs also. And regarding Ex-NDA making to higher ranks and others not making it, it is not always true!! If he does well in 10+2 Tech, he will make it to great positions and higher ranks in the technical fields..
