How to Crack the SSB Interview

by Uday Kumar on July 16, 2012

Being able to serve one’s own country is truly a blessing to those who are able to achieve it. One such revered and most honorable accolade is to be a part of the armed forces and contribute to keeping our nation safe and secure from invaders.

Whatever armed force you want to be a part of, be it the army or the Indian navy, it is essential to perform exceptionally well in the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview in order to secure a position as an Officer in Indian Armed Forces.

The civilians are allowed to take any number of attempts so as to crack SSB interview. The interview particularly focuses on personality and intelligence of a prospective candidate and takes place over a 5 day period, thereby giving the Interviewing Officer enough time to determine and completely comprehend each contender’s potential to perform as well as be compatible with the commission of Armed Forces of India.

The tests comprise of a series of projection tests that portray a particular candidates various qualities and characteristic behavior, by putting them through psychological tests, group tasks and a personal interview. The various tests conducted during the five days are comprehensive and consist of:

  • Day 1: Intelligence Test (Verbal and Non-Verbal), Picture Perception Test
  • Day 2: Psychology Tests such as Thematic Appreciation Test, Word Association Test, Situation Reaction Test and Self Description Test.
  • Day 3 and Day 4: Group Testing Officers (GTO) Tests such as Group Discussion, Group Planning exercise, Progressive Group Tasks, Group Obstacles, Command Task, Lecturette topics and Final Group Task and also the personal interview.
  • Day 5: Final meeting with the Assessors.

The Purpose of SSB Interview

There are numerous reasons as to why this SSB interview is of crucial importance in selecting the appropriate officers for the Armed Forces. But the primary goal is to look for candidates having Officer Like Qualities (OLQ’s).

The intention of the SSB interview is to scientifically analyze the psychological potential and outlook of the candidate. To prepare for SSB interview and crack it successfully, candidates must focus on developing the leadership qualities such as:

  • Ability to take ownership and responsibility of a situation.
  • Take initiatives and execute them effectively.
  • The potential to make appropriate and efficient decisions under tremendous amounts of stress.
  • The level of expertise in sound reasoning and organizing.
  • The proficiency and command over the language and being able to communicate effectively and fluently.
  • Some key leadership traits such as extent of determination, self-reliance, willingness to be the leader and set the tone/example for the rest of the group and courage.
  • Most importantly above all this is the possession of feeling of compassion and loyalty towards India.

Tips To Crack the SSB Interview

  • The various tests conducted over the 5 day period require only average intelligence. In order to be able to successfully crack the interview, there are certain specific traits to be developed. They are:
  • The interview officers gauge the candidate’s natural response to situations and events. Therefore, it is essential to remain true to one’s personality and not try to duplicate others.
  • The candidates are under scrutiny not only while taking the various psychological tests, but throughout their 5 day stay in the headquarters. The candidates will thus have to be aware of this observation and conduct themselves judiciously and prudently.
  • It is always important to perform well in the numerous psychological tests that are designed to determine the most apt candidate for the positions. It is beneficial to showcase the positives and avoid writing negative aspects while taking the test.
  • It also helps to a certain limit to undergo professional coaching before attempting to take the SSB interview.
  • The SSB interview officers also look for the candidate’s potential to grasp and adapt to new situations quickly. Therefore the candidates should look to develop these habits and be able to become compatible and accustomed to unfamiliar events within a quick span of time.
  • The candidates should augment their abilities of being able to think and judge reasonably, remaining assertive and convince people about their ideologies and approaches to solve problems and be logical and analytical in their ways to tackle issues.
  • The candidates code of conduct, etiquette and manners are all crucial to turn the interview in favor of them. Make sure that you are neatly dressed and look presentable at all times. Avoid cliché mannerisms and be cheerful.

Summary

The SSBs in a nut-shell seek to bring about an outline of the personality profile of the aspirant through the various tasks and depict his true character and thought process. It lies in the ability to develop unique Officer Like Qualities (OLQ’s) that will attract the attention of all assessing officers and enable the candidate to easily clear the SSB interview.

Dear Sushant the intelligence test does not mean an average person can not clear. An average person can clear them with 85%.

Good afternoon sir, As i am an engineer in cse discipline can you
please tell me what will be the job for me if i get commisioned.

Dear Aslam, it depends on which entry you join. If you join as a education officer then you will teach trainees, if you join as a pilot then you will fly planes, etc. So basically it all depends on what entry you join the armed forces.

Dear Sir,

I have applied for SSC (OBS) entry and I was conferenced out in my pilot entry 2012. I have few queries to discuss with you.
If the interviewer asking about
” Why did you opt obs entry instead of pilot? ”
” Why didn’t you clear in your previous entry? ”
Hoe should I answer these questions?

Could you please advice me on this?

hello sir!
i had read every information about ssb in your site in every site from ssb crack to naval journey….but non of this site had specifically mentioned anything about phase-1 (screen in) most of the student actually don’t know how to get screen in.but all the site has more concentrated on after screen in Phase-2 do you know how many people came for ssb around 900 to 1200 student are called up in every call up day but in those only 40 to 50 get screened in.
sir what i am trying to say is please give the student some essential tips to get screened in.every site has written, what is going to happen in the 1st day 1st intelligent test then PPDT.Do you all really know what they need to get screened in what are the things they are looking from us. you all are just wasting time people need to at 1st get screened in then they will think about flat foot or something.
sir its my request to you and to every site, please show what actually people need don’t show what you site people what to show.

Regards and cheers

sir,a few days back i had my ssb and in ppdt i made a story on two guys sitting and talking with an empty chair beside them. The story was : “wife of one of them has died and he is in trauma while the other is a psychologist and is healing him and does it successfully”. I was rejected and my conscience says that the story was awfully negative. Please sir answer to this question if it really was the reason for my rejection.
Please do answer to this.

Hello sir,
I’m 23year old male. Recently I got recommended for Indian navy as a pilot in the SSC. I’d undergone LASIK surgery when I was 20.My post lasik corneal thickness was found to be 424 microns in the left eye and 407 microns in the right eye.
But the IAF rule says, it shouldn’t be less than 450 microns. So they gave me permanent rejection to serve in any of the branches of the Indian armed forces(including tech & logistics). But when I showed it to opthalmologists outside, they said this rule has no medical significance. They said even USAF fighter pilots fly with lesser corneal thickness.
Can you please say, why this rule is being followed only in Indian armed forces? Is there any way of appealing against this rule? Is it possible for me to file an RTI in this regard or a court case against this decision? How far will it help me?

Hello sir,
The effort you did for patriots like us is really appreciable. I am a student of eleventh standard and want to join the Indian Navy in future. As I am a student so many people think that these are mere fantasies but no, I am real serious on this. There’s just one problem. I don’t have any leadership qualities in me. So, can you please help me out on that. Will be eagerly waiting for you response.
Thanking you
