The National Defence Academy was founded nearly six decades ago and has been a pioneer is the field of imparting training to the officers of Indian Army, Indian Navy and Air Force (a few trainees from our friendly countries also get trained here ). It is located in Khadakwasla near Pune, Maharashtra. The NDA has consistently grown in its stature and ethos. The NDA boasts of not only the greatness it has achieved in peace or war. But also boasts of the indomitable spirit left behind by their great men which has made the NDA such an admired entity.

The NDA is well known to provide excellent and benchmark levels of training in professional, intellectual, leadership as well as moral and ethical spheres. Thereby, they are up to date in using the latest technologies and innovative concepts with an aim to develop competent officers to the Army, Navy and Air Force who will be capable of leading the nation to victory with great levels of integrity during wars.

The Insignia and Motto

The present NDA insignia has a maroon background which symbolically represents the heraldry, chivalry and sacrifice of their officers. The crest comprises of symbols of the Army, Navy and Air Force superimposed on each other with the Ashoka Capitol mounted atop it. It is true symbol of the harmony between the three great services as the anchor supports the sword and both in turn support the eagle. This insignia indicates that they are not four separate entities, but one complete and wholesome structure portraying the brotherhood of the armed forces of India. The motto is placed on a ribbon at the base of the insignia.

The Vision and Mission

Just like any organization, the NDA also has its own vision and mission which serves as it’s benchmark. The vision statement reads as follows:

“The NDA will continue to be the premier joint training institution and centre of excellence in the world for producing junior leaders for the Indian Armed Forces, and Armed Force of friendly foreign countries, equipped with the mental, moral and physical attributes required to cope with the challenges of the future battlefield and capable of leading troops to victory, in conventional, non conventional and asymmetrical conflicts.”

They also have a powerful mission statement that lays out the plan of action in order to achieve the goals of the vision statement. It reads:

“We in NDA would ensure the maintenance and further enhance the infrastructure of the Academy thereby providing a suitable training environment for all existing and future requirements, simultaneously ensuring that the heritage value of the NDA is constantly kept alive and vibrant. The NDA would foster an environment that encourages individual growth, promotes welfare, and enhances quality of life for personnel to make the NDA family happy and spirited.”

The SSB Interview

In order to be eligible to undergo training in the reputed NDA, the young aspirants will have to clear the SSB interview held in the Services Selection Board campuses in various parts of the country such as Allahabad, Bangalore, Mysore, Varanasi and Bhopal. The SSB interview is a 5 day process and comprises of numerous tests designed by the DRDO in order to help determine the candidates with the required essential skills and attitude to undergo further training in NDA. The main purpose of the SSB interview is to help interviewing officers choose the right candidates with Officer Like Qualities (OLQ’s). The candidate preparing for the SSB interview will have to undergo various tasks over the 5 day period. This includes:

  • Day 1: Intelligence Test (Verbal and Non-Verbal), Picture Perception Test
  • Day 2: Psychology Tests such as Thematic Appreciation Test,        Word Association Test, Situation Reaction Test and Self Description Test.
  • Day 3 and Day 4: Group Testing Officers (GTO) Tests such as Group Discussion, Group Planning exercise, Progressive Group Tasks, Group Obstacles, Command Task, Lecturette topics and Final Group Task.
  • Day 5: Final meeting with the Assessor.

To be able to crack SSB interview, the aspirants will have to ensure that they prepare themselves not only intellectually but ethically and morally as well. The candidates will be under continuous observation even when they are not taking up tests. This is to check whether they are maintaining their discipline and decorum at all times. The SSB interview tests are designed such that the officers have sufficient time and information from the test results to determine the appropriate candidate for training in NDA. In a nut-shell, the SSB looks to portray the candidate’s personality and attitude that will enable him to be leader who can lead the troops to success.

The candidates who clear SSB interview will then undergo rigorous training in the NDA. The NDA has an astonishing infrastructure for all-round and comprehensive training of the cadets. They go through both indoor and outdoor training. At the completion of training, the cadets will perform a Passing Out Parade which is the most spectacular amongst all events conducted in the NDA.

Dear Krishna, the tests are designed by DRDO and the psycology tests are conducted by the DRDO scientists. The tests are not very difficult. The tests are merely a scale to filter out people with below average intelligence. An average intelligent person must be able to clear the tests comfortably.
