SSB Interview Questions with Answers

by Uday Kumar on June 23, 2012

Serving our armed forces is a dream for many of the youngsters. Each aspiring candidate is put through a series of rigorous tests to assess the individual on an overall basis, taking into account all the aspects such as aptitude, physical fitness and personality. The SSB (Service Selection Board) interview process tests the personality and the intelligence of an individual and tests their adaptability and compatibility; they use scientific analysis to test and evaluate the individual.

SSB selection process consists of two levels, the initial screening test and the second level comprises of three tests including a psychology test, Group Testing Officers (GTO) test and a personal interview. The initial screening tests check your intelligence and the test involves verbal and non-verbal questions followed by PPDT tests (picture perception test and discussion). In order to get selected in Indian navy and other armed forces an individual should prepare effectively to crack ssb interview.

When you have cleared all the rounds and you are in the final stage of personal interview it is very essential that you create a very good impression. This is best done by demonstrating your ability to handle any kind of stressful situation, to think clearly, to make feasible decisions, to take the initiative and ownership in certain issues and above all the willingness to serve our nation.

Since the personal interview consists of questions which are very common, it is very essential that a test taker prepares for this in advance when he or she decides to take an SSB interview. Some of these questions are listed below; individuals are assessed based on their effective response.

General Questions:

  • What is your name and meaning of the name?
  • Your family members name and the meaning of their names, how do you compare yourself with them?
  • Which place you come from and what do you do currently?
  • Tell me about yourself?
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  • What things do you like about your native place?

Education Related Questions:

  • Which school and college you graduated from?
  • What is your favorite area of study/subject?
  • Which teacher you like very much and why?
  • Which teacher you don’t like and its reason?
  • Tell me about your specific achievements during your study?
  • Did you choose your area of study or group of study by yourself or did you do by compulsion?
  • How much did you score in your tenth, twelfth, college? If your marks decreased in any particular subject what steps did you take to overcome that?

Family and Friends:

  • Which family member you like the most and why?
  • How you help your father and mother?
  • How much pocket money did you get when you were in college and how you utilized it?
  • How do they utilize the monthly income in your family and how do you feel about that?
  • Who are the other family members you are very attached to and why?
  • What activities do you do on your holidays?
  • Who are your friends? What do you like most in them?
  • How many friends you have and how many of them are very close to you?
  • How have you helped your friend in their time of need?
  • Among your friends to whom do you share your personal things?

Hobbies and Interests

  • What is your favorite hobby? Why? From when do you have this as a hobby?
  • Is your latest hobby different from the childhood one and the reason for it?
  • Describe about the things that you have learned from your hobby?
  • The interests question will vary depending on the individual’s interests some of which are sports, games, music, art, literature and many more.
  • There will also be questions that will check your knowledge in your area of interest and also related to your academic background, there will also be questions which check your Leadership and organizational capability, Current affairs, general knowledge questions, Practical questions.

General Tips for SSB Interview

Here are a few general tips to follow while you prepare for ssb interview:

  • First Impression is the best impression, so create one.
  • Follow proper dress code.
  • Display a proper body language, since most of the communication is always non-verbal.
  • Keep smiling always.
  • Be truthful and straight to the point; do not beat around the bush.
  • Be very clear and audible when you explain your thoughts.
  • Develop your analyzing capability.
  • Do not lose your temperament, stay calm and grounded.

Tips for answering the questions

When you are answering any self-descriptive questions, do not just repeat the points in the bio-data or resume you have submitted to the interviewing officer. Instead, tell the interviewer things that are not mentioned, for instance your special qualities, goals, ambitions, source of motivation, unique traits etc. When you are put through a stress interview, understand that it is basically done to test the true personality of the candidate. Handle all the questions with a smile on your face and answer truthfully. Always try to explain things in a very simple and very elegant way; the interviewer will surely be impressed.

nice sir .. its amazing ..Sir i want to know from u that how to prepare for Indian coast guard PSB (verbal and non – verbal test) , i came to know about that its bit difficult compare to any SSB intelligence test , so sir and all who have cleared verbal and non – verbal test, suggest me from which book to prepare ???? please help!!!

Uday Kumar June 24, 2012 at 1:25 pm

Dear Vinod, Even I have heard the same. But I havnt seen it. You can refer to CSR for getting sample questions of Verbal and non-verbal. If you want the entire course of study materials then I can give you. But if you want only Verbal and non-verbal only, thenyou can buy any book which is used for bank POs exam.

pawan January 21, 2013 at 11:03 am

i think the verbal and non verbal in coast guard is not that difficult the most important thing is that the question are displayed on screen and the time constraint is main problem their so u need to be quick. rest questions are very easy you dont need any special preperation for it.

vinay June 25, 2012 at 6:07 am

1. when asked about the teachers we dislike, what should we answer?
2. what should we wear when we report on the first day?
3.does having more friends add to an advantage? i dont have many but they are few i can trust.
4.i tend to sweat when facing interviews. i talk fluently normally but in tests as these i tend to have pauses. i am practising in front of my mirror. any suggestions sir?

I am serving in the Army for the last 16 years and I have experience in clerical side, so I want to apply for SL commision (Record Officer). I have adequate written power in English but not confiedent in spoken english. Please guide me, how to improve my spoken english.

uday July 17, 2012 at 10:11 pm

Muthu Ramu, you need to speak for that. Try to read news paper articles, books loudly in front of a mirror. Try to practise speaking a lecture in front of a mirror. Then may be try to speak to some of your friends who might help you or correct your english. Also side by side read Basic English grammar books. Books from Collins Publications like Improve your Grammar, Spoken English Made Easy, How to Write Well . These books will help you a lot.

Sweety February 28, 2013 at 1:32 am

Hello Sir,

Hello Sir,

I have many questions to be asked as last time in the month of February I has attended SSB for NCC entry however got conference out. I know I did not do well in my interview. Below are the list of questions which I have doubt:

1) When I entered the room Sir asked me if in tensed. I replied No but Im little nervous. Sir asked why I told this is first time I’m giving my interview to President.
2) I said at times I’m lazy however if in not able to make for jogging in the morning then I go exercise at home.
3) But when I go to jogging I completed 4 rounds in 15 minutes which is equal to 2 km. then Sir asked me then maths questions related to speed and time that how much average time you take then. As I was little bad in maths I gave the answer but told that I’m bad in maths twice.
4) The main problem is that I did not try for any of the 3 Armed force after completing my college in year 2008 as there were some restriction from my family side. But I always wanted to join. Sir then asked me why you dint not try I told the same reason the next question was what reason I told because my father and brother told it is not good for girls. This could be the negative point taken..? but I told I have convinced them and I started tying as this was my 2nd attempt and 1st time I was screen out.
5) As I work since 2009 till date for corporate company Honeywell whether this could make any bad impression on IO.
6) Also please can provided me your mail I’d so that I could write my doubts directly.

I would be happy to know my shortcoming and will improve for my next SSB as I have next SSB in the month of April.

Thank you,

ravi kumar singh jadon June 11, 2013 at 7:54 am

Sir ,
I had been through 33 ssb board on 8th May 2013.In my interview Prisident asked me reasons for not selected in my previous attempts..Unfortunately he was not satisfied with my answers.I quoted reasons for my Communication skills.Sometimes I spoke too much ,Sometimes too less.I was screened out continously in 12 attempts .But last 2 times I had attended conference. Now I have ssb at 33 ssb board .If he will ask me same question in interview What should I do?Should I reply the same answers(Possibly again he will not be satisfied with my answers and will not recommend me)?or Change them(If he remember he might found conflicting answers to previous attempt).Kindly guide me.
