SSB Medical Tests and Examination Procedure

by Uday Kumar on October 3, 2012

Once the results of SSB come out, the authority asks the recommended candidates to go for a medical test before the medical board. The test includes medical tests and examination carried out by the military hospital. The hospital related to the Navy, army or the air-force complete the procedure within four to five days, and during the time, the candidate need to stay in the hospital. The NDA exam candidates are required to appear for medical tests by both army and navy, and in case they are declared unfit, they can appeal against the decision to the president of the medical board. This rule is applicable to all unfit declared candidates, and the process of reviewing is carried under the guidance of the president of the board. The cruciality of the exam in determining the career of young men is taken into consideration.

ssb medical tests

Maintaining the code of conduct is a prerequisite while a candidate is within the territory of the selection center. After the results of the SSB exam are declared the candidates are given new chest number, and they need to remain in the center for some more time.

The reason behind conducting a medical test is to find out if the candidate has any disability or not. Confidentiality is maintained while the medical test is on, specially for the lady candidates and thus, a lady medical officer is present during the examination. The board also comprises of both male and female members including gynecologists and other specialists. This is to ensure that everything is done properly, and the candidates don’t have any problem that can manifest in the future. Check up of heart, eye, nose, throat, teeth, ear and BMI are done along with some very essential blood tests. This is to ensure that the person doesn’t have a transmittable disease, and the eye check up is done to rule out myopia. The IAF officer requires having a distant vision of 6/6 without the glasses and the Army and Navy officer can have it with or without glasses. CP-3 is the standard color vision and the colors red and green should be identified well by the candidate. Myopia within the range of 3.5D is acceptable, and the same rule applies for Astigmatism.

As far as physical parameters are concerned 157.5cm height is the minimum requirement and the candidate should be fully fit. For air-force, the cut off is 162.5cm, and it should be according to the standard of the age-height-weight ratio. Gorkhas and north eastern are given a margin of 5cms less. For women, the minimums are 142cm and 36kgs. The weight chart is the guidelines for determining the correct weight, for example, an 18 years old boy should have a height of 142.5cm while it would be 193 for 22 years. As far as the weight is concerned it should be ideally, 44 and 77kgs.

Joint and bone deceases are strictly not allowed while the chest should be developed enough. The x ray is taken as evidence. The hearing capability should be within the normal range, and no previous history of metal disease and fits should be there. Under quiet condition, the person should be able to hear a forced whisper coming from 610cms away. Enlargement of liver and spic can result into elimination, and the same rule is an application if the there is any problem related to functionality of organs and blood vessels or any such illness. Healthy heart and a proper blood pressure are a prerequisite before you can qualify as an officer for Navy, Army and Air-force. Rejection can come if there is untreated problem of hernia and piles, or there is abnormality found in urine test. In case of hernia and piles that have not yet been operated, the candidate will be declared as unfit. The urine is checked for any abnormalities, and in case of such abnormalities, the candidate can be rejected. The dental checkup guidelines include 14 dental points when the number of teeth is 32.

It is always great to maintain proper physical condition if you are going to appear for the test and this can be ensured by regular exercise, jogging, skipping, jogging, pushups and other such exerciser. Swimming or other such training can be proved beneficia

Thank you sir for the articles,
I want to know the medical standards for the Territorial Amy.
Mainly about the eye fitness after Lasik surgery.
cause sir TA and CDS medical standards are common, but the conditions to be satisfied for eye are not clearly mentioned post LASIK surgery.

Dear sir,

Will minor fillings in teeths reject in SSB medicals?

Uday Kumar October 4, 2012 at 11:33 pm

To the best of my knowledge, fillings are considered as a loss of dental points…

RAJENDRA October 3, 2012 at 12:22 pm

Mukesh Pandey October 3, 2012 at 7:00 pm

okay bro, here’s an advice I’d like to give in this regards-:

You are 22 year old —————— 85 kgs——————— 172 cms

so to maintain ur weight… you need 2200 calories each day..

take my advice … take no more than 1000 calorie a day… the left around 1200 calories will be used up from your body… this for 1 month… and you will lose 6 kgs in a month.

Uday Kumar October 4, 2012 at 11:41 pm

Dear Rajendra to reduce your WEIGHT you will need to control your eating habits and increase your physical activity. It will surely look impossible at the begining and you will feel like giving up every second and every minute. Just stay focused for 8 days. From the 9th day onwards you will feel it comfortable to eat a low calorie and high fibre food. And do a lot of physical activity.
Physical Activity you must do:

Buy a pair of good sports shoes and start running. Run when ever you get time. I still run every day for half an hour about 4 kms after 2030 hrs (that is when I get free) just before dinner. So if you have to be fit stop finding excuses. Do a lot of cardio exercises like pushups, situps, swimming, skipping, jumping, sprinting, jogging, etc.

According to your height you must be ideally 61 kgs with + or – 10%. That will make it 67kgs max. In cases of high bone weight and muscular body a relaxation upto 5-7 kgs might be given.

Meenakshi October 3, 2012 at 1:08 pm

how much relaxation is allowed in the weight??

Ayush Yadav October 3, 2012 at 2:06 pm

I cleared the ssb for navy last month. Our medicals were done at INHS Sanjivani ,Cochin.I was declared medically Fit.There relaxation were given to a good extent. A candidate who weighed 70kgs height 173 cms was declared fit .So over wieght n underweight isnt an issue to a certain limit.

arpita June 21, 2013 at 7:36 pm

I got recommended for technical branch. But my medical is due by this month end. My height is 147 cm. But the required height for women mentioned is 152 cm. So will I be rejected in medicals due to less height. Pls reply. I wil be grateful to you.

Dear Prabhat, I dont know how to react to such a question!!! Firstly let me ask you, if incase you have to go for the medical examination to a doctor completely naked for joining the Armed Forces will that any how change your decision to join the forces???? And regarding confidentiality YES!!! Do you think people will take photographs of you naked and will circulate it or post it in FB or something…..????? And regarding Lady doctors Yes !! They might also check you. You must understand that to a doctor you are only a specimen!!! They dont get excited seeing you naked…..

All the best for your medicals

Rohith January 22, 2013 at 10:58 am

Sir, I have qualified my Ssb interview for the Indian army but I was declared unfit as the detected a cyst near my kidney called it as para pelvic cyst. I met the doctors but they said they won’t be treating it as it is not harmful and didn’t give me any pain and further treated would be risky. They also said it was common to have a cyst which not harmful. I told the same thing to the Pune medical board but I was still declared as unfit. I have qualified the sSb interview in my first attempt but yet I’m declared unfit on medical issues. I have a last chance to appeal to the Delhi medical board but the situation is the same no doctor wants to treat the cyst without any internal proble. Should I appeal to the Delhi for the same or should I just let it go as I can do nothing about. Plz let me know I’m really feeling bad.

sharath September 19, 2015 at 1:20 pm

about some time ive been thinking about this what is the differnce between cp 3 and colour blindness i was just looking at the medical standards for ITBPF i.e indo tibetan border police force the medical standards are the same there written there in the ad was – THE COLOUR PERCEPTION STANDARD WILL BE CP 3 AND THE CANDIDATE MUST NOT HAVE COLOUR BLINDNESS. people with mild colour blindness are cp 3 as far as i know ,, then why the contradiction every time i tell someone that i have colour blindness they say that i cant join but no one listens to the fact that i am also cp3 the minimum requirements either way if i dotn get selection i always had my second options but rejection will always be a disappointment
